Yeah, you are right about the very first era of the comics. It was more about the protection of racialized minorities.

I have a bias as I'm mainly concentrating on the later occurence of the group (from 1990 to today) where the concept of mutan coming-out is actively pushed by showrunners and artists.

In anycase, it could be a very nice tool to introduce some leftist and sociological concept (especially "racialization"). I really recommend X-men 97. It's simple but effective.
