To be honest Naruto didn't really need a good female protagonist. Sakura was sidelined and that was good enough. Maybe some other females could have had more focus on them but not to the point where they would be Naruto or sasuke's equals.

For me Hinata was really annoying with her "Naruto-kun", being so shy and etc. She was not main protagonist material.
Sakura got a ton of development even if Kishimoto did not show it properly.
I love Sakura as a character! She is my favorite in Naruto.
