A year ago we finally got Gear 5 aka Monkey Disney Looney-Tunes

What was your reaction and feelings back then? And did it change?
Are you happy or satisfied with G5?

Personally, I still despise G5 reveal being Nika Nika and how the fight became a comical battle.
I am kinda okay if there's no cartoonist sfx and gags. And if Luffy isn't laughing all the time.

Not a fan back then, still not a fan. I feel like Oda doesn't know how to make Luffy fight with these new powers, it's just gag on gag moments.
So I still need to see more against another top tier.

The reveal is still really jarring with it only being ever hinted during this arc but outside of that I really like it. It’s fun and I like old cartoons

Tho I guess shanks a devil fruitless man with a devil fruitless crew taking a devil fruit is kinda a hint at it being more than ordinary
Also the theory that he went to the east blue originally for ace

Didn't like it much in the manga exactly. Design is good and altho the ability is wacky it was still bearable for me in manga.

The anime is absolutely unbearable to watch. There was way too much unnecessary motion to the point it hard to follow the actual fight. The sound effects were fucking atrocious. The laugh was annoying, even tho i love luffy's VA. Had to watch half the episode on mute. That's how annoying the sound effects were to me

I hated it back then, I am now neutral to it.

I don't dislike G5 abilities, the whole toon thing a side, Luffy turning everything around him in rubber follows the norm of what I kinda expected from his awakening.

I just don't like really don't like Nika.

Keep G5 exactly as it is, but just say that it's the gum gum awakening, not some Nika bullshit and would like it without issues

Basically just this.
I am willing to tolerate the retcon of gomu DF being Nika DF even.

I am fine with the ability to turn stuff around him to rubber, it's something many of us expected of the awakening back when it was gomu DF also.

The gag shit, and making a joke out of villains who have been hyped since ages and completely destroying the hype if what makes me truly despise G5.
Once the casuals get used to the nonsense hype and get past it, if G5 continue making a joke out of villains, I can guarantee you that this sentiment is only going to increase in the future.

I like the design and effect of G5, but Oda could have done a better job at hinting at G5 prior to its reveal.

G5 was shit and is still shit, but the twist to change Luffy's fruit from Paramecia to a mythical Zoan could've been brilliant provided that you're not a schizo and can actually execute it well.

The fight vs Kaido became ass as soon as Luffy went G5.
G2/G3 Luffy vs Kaido > G4 vs Kaido >>>> G5 vs Kaido

Luffy having the most broken DF of all is also trash "child of fate" writing.

Back then at first I was annoyed by the usual fake tension by Oda (omg Luffy is dead for the # time, this time for real! but actually he unlocked his # power up mid fight). I had no particular problems with the Looney toons fighting style, could be better could be worse. In general I don't like it much cause it is an a**pull and there are no new elements which made me change this opinion.

g5 was as much an asspull then as it is now


but the manga has done so little the past 2 months, and i doubt lolda is gonna give us anything interesting until december at the earliest

I liked and still the like Luffy having complete freedom on his rubber body, the concept in itself is fine. I like Luffy's ultimate PU in Wano being this over haki. I was actually disappointed the finisher was just a huge punch with all the possibilities offered by G5.

Yet

-Toon stuff :
Silliness has always been part of the series, but Oda usually knew when to separate hyper whacky stuff from dramatic stuff. Hard to take Wano's drama seriously when Luffy is playing jumping rope with the big boss of the arc and making reaction faces coming straight from Tom & Jerry. Didn't mind it vs Lucci because it was just a short secondary figh.

That twist is almost series breaking, explained many times why by different users.

My opinion didn't change, fine concept but the execution is ass.
Keep the fun toon stuff for secondary fights and cut the mythical zoan god chosen one bullshit and G5 could have been my favorite PU in the series.

Still the most unsatisfying asspull.

I like gear 5 though. It suits Luffy more. But I still prefer serious Luffy when fighting, it is just more epic.

Gear5 is cartoonish. It's meant to be silly and funny. Yet, despite that, I had more fun reading Saitama one punching his opponents with a straight face.
