Fall 2001 , my family bought me one piece volume back then they were fascinated with japanese comics on the trip to singapore if i remember.
I was not big fan back then but sanji vs Gins fight was pretty cool i def would say i was more of GI joe , transformer fan but the fight sequence of sanji, zoro promising himself to become better swordsmen inclined my interest in the manga.
Of course luffy's gomu fruit was key reason as well it was rare to read pirate manga with rubber powers .

A friend of mine was an avid One piece fan and I was an avid Naruto fan.
We used to argue over which was better. He'd watched both and I'd only seen Naruto yet I thought my opinion was better than his in this matter.
In order to win the arguments once and for all, I decided to at least watch one piece with the sole reason to find anything to prove it was inferior to Naruto.
I could've easily dropped one piece in two episodes (I was watching the dub) if and only if, Naruto wasn't pure shit at the time. This was around half way through the ninja war.
Naruto was so boring that I literally couldn't even nitpick the first arcs like syrup village in order to drop one piece coz at least I gave a shit about something in the arc while Naruto had burned me out completely by then.
And so Baratie and Arlong park came and I was certainly hooked for real and completely stopped caring about Naruto from that day on.

On an online power level forum in which there was a matchup thread of Ichigo vs Naruto vs gear second 'Luffy'.
At that point in time, I had been watching bleach and naruto religiously, so I was like tf is a 'Luffy"? Wtf is gear second? And generally just being dismissive towards luffys capabilities.
So then I gave one piece a try, so I could accurately powersclae 'Luffy' in that thread. And little by little- not that I wanted it (at the time), OP become my favourite.

I started in 2017 as well lol (december 2016 was when I decided I would start watching One Piece after the Naruto Shippuden anime ended)
but in terms of when I first saw or was exposed to One Piece, 2004-2005 when it was on 4kids as english dub. I was so scared of it (and pirates in general) back then and as a result I never wanted anything to do with it for years

Out of curiosity. I was skeptic about OP lol. I thought what's so interesting about rubber power and its relation to pirate world. And I saw OP manga was too complex drawn.
But due to boredom, I started my first watch on OP on 2017. At early arcs I felt like it's a boring show. But I kept watching and got addicted when I reached arlong Park arc. Since then, I watched OP 6 hours everyday until the latest episodes lol
