Character Discussion I finally understand Garp

#22
Nonsense, his character is still shit
  • there's no reason for him to refuse Admiral rank if he's gonna ignore wg anyway, Admiral rank or even rising to fleet Admiral rank would help him change stuff far more than just being rouge vice admiral obsessed with roger
  • Fujitora just joined and already did far more things than Larp. And Fujitora disobeys CDs without even him knowing about the imu shit.
  • Why was he mad at Dragon for going to war with WG when he just punched Saturn/imu and teamed up with pirates?

Luffy and Garp is a matter of scale : Luffy's crew is made of 10 members while Garp is made of 500 000 and can't handpick them all, but at core the feeling is the same.
Remember when Luffy said he would literally murder Zoro in cold blood for having killed those whiskey peak people.

like Luffy said he would kill Zoro. Not beat him up or kick him out of the crew. He said Murder.

Garp’s best friend Sengoku led a task force or marines to murder hundreds of pregnant women to get rid of Ace

there is absolutely nothing similar about these situations at all. Garp’s affinity for the marines is absolutely nothing like Luffy. Luffy respects his crew. And he puts them on a pedestal. He doesn’t treat them like little kids whose actions don’t matter and who he has to protect as their big daddy

That's the one thing I can't really explain, although if I were to rely on headcanon I guess he didn't like his son becoming an after fighting them for decades. Should've laughed it off
Maybe it's a case of Anger Born of Worry.

But a strong possibility is that the high rank Marines like Garp, Sengoku, Akainu, Kizaru etc were fed some BS lie that convinced them they were working for the greater good like the Warriors in AOT.

I hope that's the case otherwise Garp's continued employment would be weird, like he's a D clan member who actively fought Imu after all.

that was a fucking gag fight that ended with Nami winning, as if Luffy really wanted to murder Zoro lmao. Don't take every single thing literally.

We didn't actually see any pregnant woman getting killed, some random marine said something like "inspect every pregnant woman and kill the suspicious one" but with how sympathetically Sengoku been portrayed post-timeskip I expect Oda to come up with something about how they never found a pregnant woman suspicious enough to get murdered if asked.

Did you miss Luffy's entire motive for G2? Getting stronger to protect his nakama that are not strong

Anyway no shit the relationship dynamic is not the same, the scale is completely different. But the core loyalty to their found family is the similar.

Fujitora is the only thing that keeps Garp from being the character people claim he is. He is literally showing us you can be an Admiral and not serve CDs, they won't even do shit about it. And the Admiral position is a lot more influential, it's because of Fujitora that the Warlord system got abolished.
I wonder if the first time they were about to promote Garp was after GV. In that case I can understand why he would refuse.
Slave opressor is eternal victim to be introduced to early where oda had no concrete plans with him, same with Eastdragon and Painter

Thats why you cant retroactivly fit what oda bungled over the years with their few apperances but still attrocious inconistent Characterization
I agree but as long we accept that his sense of belonging is stronger than his sense of justice, his character works fine. Once again this doesn't mean he doesn't care, but after so many years you're bound to feel desensitized. and anyway that's an issue that affect every "good guy" marine, don't tell me Smoker or Koby doesn't know about the CDs. At least Garp gave me a justification I can buy for staying.

So if Zoro did murder like all the citizens of Okobore town in Wano, Luffy would do what? Since this is a gag reaction, I assume you think Luffy would have a different reaction otherwise, right?

We didn't actually see any pregnant woman getting killed,
So you’re rewriting the story now? So what was Rouge even afraid of then if nothing was happening?

since you are rewriting the story, was rouge just a fucking idiot who killed herself since there was no danger from out best friend Sengoku-chan?

Getting stronger to protect his nakama that are not strong
Luffy doesn’t think his crew is invincible same way he himself doesn’t think that he is invincible, but at no point would Luffy compromise his ideals with the excuse of “my crew is too weak so I have to change how I am to compensate for their weakness”

Get it? Luffy respects his crew both in their strength and character. Him seeing Zoro murder innocent people is treated on the level of a genuine betrayal of epic proportions to Luffy. He doesn’t just look the other way because “well the crew needs Zoro’s strength since it’s all a bunch of fucking weaklings so I can’t do anything to jeopardize the integrity of the crew”

Btw, there are similarities between Luffy and Garp that I could list but not this one. Luffy thinks way more highly of his crew than Garp does of the marines. It’s comical to say this is the big similarity between the two

"What if Zoro did [something he would never do]"

I didn't rewrite the story, I said we never witnessed a pregnant woman get murdered, which is true.
Rouge actually had a relationship with Roger, her fear was justified. I'm not justifying killing people over their blood, all I'm saying is that we never saw any random woman get murdered.

Garp never changed who he was though? He likely joined to fight and capture pirates... something he was still doing recently.

Nobody in Luffy's crew is as weak as a fodder marine, not even Usopp or Nami who can fight fodders by dozen (see fishman island). Also idk why you act like Luffy is some kind of paragon of morality when he was never show to have any issue with his role in the release of thousands of violent criminals for Ace's sake.

You're missing the point anyway. Luffy and Garp are not exact clones of each other. Luffy and Garp do not have the same dynamic with their found family because these groups are too different from each other for it to be possible. But the loyalty they feel toward it is undeniable.
Also most marines are good people who genuinely believe in helping others, even those who combat the WG say it, you act like Garp wants to protect rapists and serial killers

Sengoku feels impossible, because he has been explicitly portrayed as a WG whore. Sengoku: "are you doubting the WG?!"

As he went on commanding the murder of pregnant women associated with Roger.
This is head cannon and goes against how Oda has written Sengoku. Sengoku is ruthless against pirates however he does not involve civilians.

People complain that Oda has "retconned" Sengoku trying to portray him as a good guy when that was how he was always written. There was a reason that a civilian ship was present at Ohara and Kuzan was so appalled by Akainus action.
