Just cause you don't like a character doesn't mean said character is weak. Especially against someone like Kuzan who wasn't very impressive on panel. Old Garp beat the shit out of him and he needed the help of every other pirates on the island.
Shiryu even made the decisive hit. Without that he would have lost.
