I think Zoro is too ambitious and he would never slip away a chance of clashing with one of the greatest swords in world history.
Zoro will have to clash with Nusjuro here on Egghead even if it is a brief second, in order to showcase that Zoro is not ready yet. Zoro will not lose here but he will have his enemies power measured and then back down once the escape from Egghead is rolling. He really needs that because I think that the next arc, Elbaf will be a huge timelapse arc that might skip across few weeks possibly. We will see from the giants perspective how time freezes on Elbaf while the world around Elbaf moves in a bizarre speed.
This is where Zoro will isolate himself to undergo a massive training campaign and prepare himself for the final battles of the Strawhat Pirate's journey. (this is inverted from the moment Usopp left the Strawhats to become Sogeking and undergo a redemption)
Once Zoro finished his second trainings arc on Elbaf, he will face Mihawk and fight him fair and square. He might lose and there might be a second go, but for me it is clear: He will defeat/surprass Mihawk, Mihawk will acknowledge his strength and he will tell Zoro that he might be ready to face a true monster and the peak of swordsmanship in Nusjuro.
I think that this is probably the most solid route for Zoro to reach his goal and fulfill Luffy's and the crewmember's dreams. (He will also fight a Blackbeard Pirate at the end probably)
There might be much more to it, but this is the most shounen core I could think of right now.
