I will surpass Oda

So the current project I'm working on is this One Piece inspired story about a one armed pirate. Is it a fanfic of OP with Kid as the MC? Not really, although that is where I got the whole 1 armed pirate thing from.

I think more than OP, I feel really inspired by A Song of Ice and Fire and berserk. I want to write a story in a fantasy-like setting, but I want the main focus of the story to be on the characters and their journey, rather than getting caught up in the fantasy and the lore like I feel OP kinda tends to do.
I want the pirates in my story to be real pirates, not like in OP, where Luffy is basically just a sailor who calls himself a pirate. I guess in that way its kind of a mafia story.

The MC, Tal, is the illegitimate son of an infamous pirate and a noble. He was also born without an arm. After getting kicked out of his house at 16, he finds himself in a world that seemingly has no place for him. Because of the situation of his birth, his family wants nothing to do with him and because he is disabled, he gets rejected from most jobs he applies to.
Until eventually, he runs across a charismatic pirate who offers him a place on board his ship.

The story his about how he grows from a simple apprentice, to being the captain of his ship, and ultimately, the lord of the island he was born in.

The MC sounds like a fusion between Kid and Jon Snow, dope

Can you upload the chapter or page of your writing somewhere?

No i mean maybe just some examples of your writing, even if it's 2-3 pages or stuff
Honestly, I think I might have a short chapter out in a couple weeks. I'll keep y'all updated.

update:

I'm still writing/drawing my comic. Its hard tho, because I need to focus on school, which means I can at most create one decent concept art a week. Once I have enough concept arts to where I feel comfortable, I'll probably put out a chapter 1.

I'm not doing a shitty pirate manga anymore tho. One Piece is mid and I don't feel the need to create anything even remotely resembling it anymore. The thing I've been really working on the past few months is this superhero story. I'm really passionate about it, so I hope I get at least decent recognition when I publish.

not yet, but I’m doing a lot better than I was when I originally made this post, so I’d like to think I’m closer to that

I think actually being a mangaka isn’t probably a good job tbh. They seem like they are over exploited by the industry.

Basically needing to bust their ass just to get featured and once that happens, they need to fight just to keep their stories going.

If they can’t do that, then their series gets killed off by the magazine and their work was for nothing.

Oda is really good at his job. He found the perfect formula for mastering serialization and he is skilled enough to pull it off effectively.

OP has its flaws. But tbh, the flaws in Oda’s writing can largely be attributed to the magazine. I mean how good of a story can you seriously write if you are on a weekly schedule?

I think the new angle to my dream. One that I think might suit my skills better and would probably be more profitable, is to start a comic company one day.

While I doubt I could rival the giants of DC or Marvel, perhaps I could create a company that could rival image comics. Or some of the less popular Japanese mags like kodansha. Idk.

Honestly tho I feel like I’ve kinda put career stuff on hold for now. Like I got a decent job as an engineer, but I just don’t feel like focusing too much on career development at the moment.

I’m 24 at the moment. I really want to have a girlfriend and be looking towards getting married by the time I’m 30. And I’d really like for whomever I end up with to be a high quality individual. Someone I’d really be proud to be married to.

So I feel like that’s my next immediate goal. Which is kinda why I really want to work on improving my physical health and meeting more people at the moment. And I think I’ve been decently successful at that.

I think once I accomplish that goal, perhaps then I’ll seriously start thinking about creating the company. That way I could have a way to send my kids to school and retire comfortably lol.

If the story is good you will get a lot of support and be able to make it on your own terms,

Congrats for landing a degree and a good job so young, that's pretty amazing. You can definitely do it when it comes to starting a family, just don't fall for someone who is trashy or abusive.
