How he got his scars from teenie dfless, hakiless Teach is another mystery
Biggest mystery? At least 3 literal haki monsters not fucking sensing the weirdness about Teach for decades when pre ts Luffy and Zoro did it at first sight.
Back to Shanks. I think a valid option of making Shanks a good fighter is giving him some super CoC Susanoo. If Zoro can CoC produce Asura, Shanks should be able to produce something like that too. A much much bigger advanced one, given his experience.

What I said Shanks can simply stop Mihawk's attack with superior Haki level, not with sword techniques. And he wouldn't be superior swordsman, swordsmanship is just 1 fighting style.
If WB was holding a sword, he is still strongest, same as Kaido, he held a sword vs. Orochi, Mihawk didn't become strongest when Kaido hold a sword.

I don't trust the "people", I trust Oda when he introduced Mihawk as the Worlds Strongest Swordsman and the goal of one of the main characters. Through that character we know he just needs to defeat Mihawk in a 1v1 and he will be the strongest all this other nonsense is your headcanon and cope
