To put it in a nutshell, yes he has the "ability" to become an Admiral. Though i see him imo a bit too much like Garp, once he finds out that they are nothing but puppets of the CD's then i see him rejecting a promotion. So likelihood, he maybe given a special insignia on his marine coat like Garp and Tsuru.
I'm very optimistic regarding Shiryu in particular, but mostly in that there are substantial hopes that he's already at least close his EoS potential and he shall probably confront EoS Zoro later on. If it's not EoS, it could occur within the proximate range. I think Zoro would defeat Shiryu, but I do hope Oda would not cut Zoro some slack and make it easy.
Its not about Kizaru or Akainu. NO ONE can hurt him for the first minutes of the battle, cause no matter what attack, he immedeatly regenreated. Kizaru`s first attack ripped him completely apart but yet he easily regenerated. Does that mean he's as strong as an Admiral ? No! Cause endurance is the key, Marco cannot regenerate infinite amount of times. We saw in the war (check the Manga), that even before the Kairoseki chains were around him, Kizaru's simple Lazer Beams made him bleed and feel A LOT of pain - only with a bit of time and will power he managed to regenrate from that. Another few attacks from Kizaru, and there would be no way that Marco could keep regenerating from that. Marco is extremely powerful and close to Admiral and Yonko, but his DF ability gets miss judged and overrated in terms of regeneration, while his attacking game, his fighting skills, speed and Haki gets underrated. Marco would be considered for the Admiral position like Gion and te Chaton, but ultimately not make the cut cause Ryokugyu and Fujitora are surely more powerful.
if he could fight days against roger pirates what make you think he has low stamina.
handle 2 yc top commanders is different story. fujitora cant properly handle sabo while kizaru failed to even touch old rayleigh. meanwhile ppl like sabo or oldman rayleigh are around current marco level. let alone kizaru who couldnt do a thing against marco in mf aside from ask help to seastoned him then cheap shot him.
in the end its battle of stamina and if i must pick between paramecia logia or zoan. the zoan will come first in stamina department.
you cant compare marco with momosagi or gion. they are have zero feat nor experience against top dog. marco been on sea for 4 decades competing with every single top dog alongside whitebeard and facing even with admirals and another yonko. he lives basically most hardest area in the world and still survive.

Who is this old ray you speak of? show me one panel of him saying he lost strength from his age, you wont he never said he lost his power only his fatigue
