Deuteragonist- A deuteragonist is the second most important character in a story, after the protagonist. The term comes from the Greek word deuteragōnistēs, which means "second actor".

did the one piece fandom just learn of this term 2nd time seeing someone use it today lol

If we really take the time to think about it

The rest of the strawhats are just supporting main characters, meaning they are the primary supporting characters that keep the Mc going

The true Deutagonist however you spell it, is Koby

His journey through the ranks started the same time as Luffys journey through piracy

They where both trained by legends from the time of ole

Both of their mentors see great potential in them and think they are the future of their respective branches

Although we don't follow his entire journey, Koby without a doubt is the secondary main character i.e the deutagonist

And he will be the man who takes down black beard!

I disagree on him taking down Blackbeard altough it seems very likely.
I have, at the moment:
  • Sabo v Akainu for the ring-structure of Akainu dying for what killed him
  • Dragon v Imu because otherwise what is he doing in the story
  • Luffy v Blackbeard
But I admit that if we put Luffy v Imu and Koby v Blackbeard it could work even better.

Obviously Zoro is the Deuteragonist. That the reason why his character seems more impactful and 2nd only to Luffy interm of notoriety eventhough in strength wise, Sanji is equal to him. It suits to Zoro as Luffy's Right-hand man while along with Sanji as Luffy's Wings.

Zoro never moved the plot
Never had arcs where he's the main focus

One Piece doesn't have any deuteragonist

No one...but Zoro is the closest that can be called deuteragonist
I would have said that in pre-timeskip it probably was Usopp then Zoro.
Now, no strawhats has anythign meaningful to say or do, only Sanjino with WCI but it was underwhelming as he had to be 100% saved by Luffy.
Law is more of a deuteragonist in post timeskip and Buggy and Blackbeard are the closest thing to a "rival", and Oda failed to build up Koby as a deuteragonist and Kidd as a rival.

Yeah, i remember the character arcs, the pivotal moments of the plots that revolved around Zoro, the defeating of important characters, the narrative built around him being a second Ryuma, or Zoro being Joyboy's return. How not to forget his complete disappearance for a major arc, or..

You are free to quote me Oda saying that zoro is the deuteragonist.
Not the vice-captain or second in command. But a quote where the story is about Luffy and secondary Zoro.
Like Naruto and Sasuke.
Or Hanamichi and Rukawa.#Otherwise you are just spamming your head canon.

Robin, and it’s not that close, she’s the whole reason the strawhats started getting acknowledged by the government, they burned the government flag, which made the strawhats threats against the government, hell they wouldn’t even be able to read Poneglyphs without Robin, which would mean they would have no chance of ever getting the one piece, she saved Luffy during alabasta, and she has helped chopper get a lot of development which without her chopper would probably still be a full on wimpy defenseless baby,
