Well, there is no true “greatest mangaka”. It’s a subjective opinion that cannot be a fact, although you are free to believe so.

Jujutsu Kaisen is certainly breaking some common tropes, and I find the series to be good. There are other manga that I like as well, and some I like better.

Do I think they’re the greatest? No, but they’re pretty good. I am still upset over a recent development. :catsweat:

Many will disagree, but there's 3 names that come to mind when thinking of who is the greatest:

-Miura
-Togashi
-Oda
Togashi is actually a pretty weak mangaka hxh is proof its an amazing series but the anime is what does it justice, he has literal panels of just writing i love the explanation but sometimes less is more.

I like Miura for berserk obviously and i like Oda but i dont think he is the goat either I genuinlly enjoy these two below but my personal favorite is possibly: Takehiko Inoue
My fav mangaka would be Hiromu Arakawa.
Fullmetal Alchemist - dark fantasy manga, amazing series.
Silver Spoon? Absolutely different vibe, still great (although I understand not everyone will be interested in reading about a town dude struggling through agriculture college).
Currently am reading her newest piece Yomi no Tsugai which is again, different from the previous two, closer in tone to FMA yet again different and very interesting so far.

What I really love about her pieces that they are different and still all of them are good. I used to adore Obata and Oba, as both Death Note and Bakuman are great mangas imo, but their Platinum End got me so bored that I dumped it. And Bakuman partially was more interesting for the topic, how the manga is made, and sometimes not for the plot. Still, both mangas are cool.

I also love Eyeshield21, so I searched by mangaka's names what else they have created, and while I liked Dr.Stone by Riichiro Inagaki and enjoy following OnePunchMan drawn by Yusuke Murata, I wouldn't say those are best mangas ever.

These are the only the cases when I didn't just read something because it was written by the same author(s), but because I specifically searched for staff they created.

Arakawa tops.
For me it's Hideaki Sorachi. One of the most difficult jobs for a writer and especially for a long running manga is to come up with a good ending, and this man was able to create one of the best endings I've seen while also maintaining the quality of the manga from beginning to end.
And his art is also pretty good.

Oh, it's the author of Slam Dunk and Vagabond! I've read the former many years ago and enjoyed it, Vagabond is still on my to-read list. A great pick!
Vagabond is my favorite and I hail it is the greatest manga even with it being in a status of hiatus for like 5 years now.

hopefully Inoue comes back to finish writing it it stopped at such a great time too.

Is there a logical stop before the hiatus or is it like HxH? I admit partially I'm delaying reading Vagabond because of the hiatus...

To sum up: “I hate JJK cuz Japanese names are being Japanese.” :rolaugh:
Mate, if an English author gave all his characters similar names like "Bob, Rob, Bill, Will, Bobby, Robbie, Robin, Bobbie, Billy, Willy, Bobbert, Robert etc" then I would equally take the piss out of them.

JJK names don't sound the same cause they are Japanese. They sound the same cause they sound the feckin same. Lol. Bleach was nothing but Japanese names too and it didn't have the problem of multiple lookalike character names. Lmao.

Health issues. At least with HxH we’ve gotten some new chapters which is nice to know that it’s coming back slowly but still ongoing where as Vagabond were leaning more towards it being done.

no updates or anything from Takehiko in regards to it just that hes excited to continue Vagabond what was supposed to be a month hiatus we have an 8 year hiatus haha

Well since I got tagged, I'll leave my opinion. :goatasure:

Lmao, feck no. JJK is the first and only major manga series that I actively dropped from sheer boredom.

First off, it reminded me too heavily of Bleach and Naruto which was a major turn off since I consider Bleach to be an utterly dogshit series.

Secondly, JJK fights are off putting. I read Gojo vs Jogo (these fuckin letter swapped names man) and thought to myself "Ok, I think I understand what happened here" only to be hit with a post fight explanation from the author himself that left me utterly confused. The fact that the author felt that the fight needed a post chapter explanation means that even Gege knew shit wasn't explained properly in the fight itself.

Thirdly, JJK designs are bland. Like painfully bland. They are the bran flakes of shounen designs. It doesn't help that the characters look like they had their names rammed through a randomised word generator that only knows 1/2 an alphabet (Gojo, Jogo, Geto, Todo, Hanami, Nanami, Yuji, Yuta).
I'm guilty with having trouble with jjk designs and names myself. The designs can be extremely badass but Gege can do better with some distinguishable facial features or something. I have to do triple takes to make sure I'm seeing the character I think I'm seeing.

Gege is far from the greatest mangaka ever, though he's definitely a top 3-5 active one from what I can tell.

In my humble opinion, Miura, Inoue, Ishida, Toshio, Isayama, and Urasawa, are the top tier of what I've read.

Maybe Togashi to, but I'm going to wait till I fully finish the HxH manga to place him there

Gege is by your conventional standards not the best writer but he is undoubtedly writing the most interesting story in Jump right now. Sakamoto Days is next but still beaten by a mile, rest of fighting shonen are whatever. Even OP lost its mojo with Oda's terrible battle structure and even worse art. One of the most anticipated battles, Yonko vs. Admiral, and he somehow manages to make it worse than Luffy vs. Bellamy.

It's also all subjective so you can consider him best writer by marketing, popularity and sales and no one can argue against it cuz only results matter. I am sure he wrote that Gojo chapter to fuck with fans and create discussion intentionally, it is genius marketing.

And the newer stuff is just garbage.

It was a joke, chill. I mean honestly I don't know much about how Japanese people are named but their names IIRC also have actual meaning like Gojo means "honored one" and Jogo means something else. Japanese people also write their names in their language not in English. Whereas literally all the names you stated are just variations/shorthand of a common English name.

Gege Akutami (Japanese: 芥見下々, Hepburn: Akutami Gege, born February 26, 1992) is a Japanese manga artist, known for their work Jujutsu Kaisen. Gege Akutami is a pen name and the author's real name is unknown.

Jujutsu Kaisen (呪術廻戦, "Sorcery Fight") has been a fan favorite and and taking over as contender for greatest of all time Mangas. Moreso with the lastest chapters we are getting peak writing and a series where the good guys lose.

What are everyones thoughts?

Crivvens mate, most names have meanings if you look up their history. A name having meaning isn't unique to the Japanese. Lel.
Japanese people also write their names in their language not in English.
Yet this supposed problem doesn't stop other manga with large casts like Bleach or MHA from avoiding character name overlap. Funny how JJK is the only shounen manga I've read that notably suffers from this in next to no time. Lol.
Whereas literally all the names you stated are just variations/shorthand of a common English name.
Shorthand names are names and you can make them sound different from each other. Say, which of these two options sounds better for a cast of characters?

Option A) Rick, Will, Beth, Tod and Bert.
Or
Option B) Ricky, Willy, Bettie, Toddy and Bobby.

Both lists are shorthands of the exact same respective names. One list consist of names that sound different from each other though.
