On one hand, it's logical for Shanks to die. all the ingredients are there.

-One of the most important figures in Luffy's life
-Has beef with a chief antagonist
-Their future clash has been implied
-Shanks losing further cements said antagonist's threat level
-The readers and Luffy are emotionally invested in beating the antagonist

But that's the problem. It's too convenient and predictable at this point. Lets look at Ace's death. What made it great was how unpredictable it was. There were was even a time it was thought Ace was successfully saved by Luffy, only for the situation to immediately shift.

Though then again, Newgate's death was seen from a mile away. He was old, sick, and he even told his crew to leave and let him handle all the enemies on his own. His death was still incredibly effective, just as much as Ace's. So Shank's death being predictable wouldn't make it any less powerful. It's all about execution.
