Is YC2 thiccness intentional on Oda's part?

Yes Oda follows a pattern with these things.
YC3 have one specific ability which makes them YC3, everything else in stats will be below par.
Example Cracker; he has good defense with his regenerating armor, however, that's all he has which is impressive. His CoA was weaker than Luffy's (couldn't bypass Luffy's COA with 3 free strikes), had weak endurance, speed (couldn't catch base Luffy), no DC (couldn't cut down Kong Baum and the trees.
Other examples will be Jack which at closer look, you will notice has similar to Cracker.
YC2: have special abilities but not as special as YC1 characters. Also are more thic was others have pointed out.
Jozu : Diamond defense but has the speed, Haki and endurance Cracker lacks.
Queen: ancient Zoan like Jack but has special abilities with poison and weapons which Jack lacks.
Jinbei : Fishman Karate, endurance, speed, Jujitsu.
Pica : Mountain golem, speed/evasiveness
Smoothie : has special water abilities and DC which Cracker lacks.
Now from the above, you will notice that YC2s have abilities which help them counter YC3s or are more extra than YC3s. Smoothie is direct counter to Cracker, so is Jinbei. Cracker and Jack lack DC to take out Pica whiles they are too slow to escape his punches or not get buried.
YC1: have a special ability which is top tier but all other abilities are high tier level or below. They have DC, AP, range...well rounded fighters with variety of abilities.
Katakuri : special ability FS, still has strong endurance and COA, and speed.
Marco : top tier endurance, flight , good physical strength.
DD : island level ability Bird Cage( got an admiral stuck in), Parasite, good endurance , good flight , range.

Doffy low- mid diff for any yc1 except King and Shiryu.
