We needed more slice of life/cooldown chapters so that characters can interact.
The only development we got was through fights. Granted, that's also a necessary talent to have when you're wroting Shonen, but you gotta balance it out.

A great character driven chapter/episode was the stuff with Yuji and that girl from his High School Nobara meets at a cafe. Small scale yet a showcase of everyone in a relaxed environment

Terrible MC, I’ve never seen an MC get sidelined by side characters as much as he does

I think he’s good. He could use some power ups sure but still a good MC. Literally when the MC isn’t like this people complain about plot armor and shit like that.

I think hes a neutral MC better than Gon thats for sure but not as good as Natsu.

In a vacuum I think he is forgettably average. His background isnt especially tragic , he's not not overtly negative or positive and his style isnt visually striking or have a gimmick you latch to. He is just a guy in this world.

As a main character I dont think he has enough standout moments or focus.

I watched season 1 and don't remember anybody name. The only good character was the muscle dude. I asked my friend if he gets his head cut off and dies. He said no he doesn't get his head cut off but he does die. I knew because the Japanese like cutting off pieces of brown characters. Or decapitation them like they do in hxh.

Yuji is great. He is the embodiment of a main character. What's so curious to me about Yuji though, is that while everyone has a cool ability, Yuji is plain. What does Yuji do? He punches you. Special powers? He's strong. Sometimes when he punches you he hits you twice.

It's kinda like, while everyone is learning badass spells, Yuji is dumping all his stats into STR, AGI, VIT, and CRIT.

The way Gege portrays things is so damn cryptic. We've been giving suggestions of unnatural things but without full explanations. I am kinda worried that Yuji is just going to pull out a bunch of new abilities seemingly out of nowhere these coming chapters.
