Aight, I’m really starting to think that even Oda himself doesn’t know what he’s talking about in these yearly missives…like, he knows he can say “the battle between THAT character and THAT character when Luffy goes to THAT place” and the fandom will (incorrectly) fill in the blanks because each instance of “THAT” can refer to a variety of people, places, and other plot points he’s tossed into the mix over the decades. Been writing this fucking story for close to 30 years and he still has to play coy, fuckin’ embarrassing…
What about the voice actors? The Luffy actress has said she looks forward to the Anime ending so that she can retire
If she’s told that she has to re-record lines for the another 20 years for this remake then she might just quit
Or are they getting new voice actors?
I highly doubt they would animate over the old voice recordings without re-recording since they will be changing the pacing and the new pacing requires new line reads
This is absolutely bizarre to me given how popular the current anime already is… This would make more sense if like the current anime was doing badly in like views but it’s actually pretty good on that front from what I have heard…
hmm… maybe it’s because people don’t buy old One piece DVDs and shit like that Shueisha realized that even though the Toei anime gets good views on tv, the dvd/bluray sales for the old seasons must be Down in the gutter so they made this deal with Netflix to remake the start of the show

- The VAs dont rerecord their lines, they have 20 years worth of lines that can be re-cut with the new animation
- They record lines for a much more abridged anime series that directly follows the manga. By the time "One Piece Kai" catches up to the main series, One Piece might already have ended by that point.
Who knows, maybe this Kai series gets such overwhelming reception that they just straight up cancel the the weekly version and only focus on the season releases of this show. Ultimately itll depend on how successful it is and how fast it takes for them to actually catch up, my guess is itll be a season per major arc, which might equate to an arc per year:
- East Blue
- Alabasta
- Skypiea
- CP9
- Thriller Bark
- Paramount War
- Fishman Island/Punk Hazard (I can see them consolidating these together)
- Dressrosa
- Zou/WCI
- Wano
- Egghead
- Elbaf
- Etcetc
Which means at worst, this could last 10+ more years on the anime side anyway unless they consolidate even more between other arcs (doesnt even feel like the manga is ending anytime soon regardless, so the Anime VAs wont be done soon anyway with this series)

“If Luffy and the others can leave Egghead safely … they should be going to that island.”
This sentence implies that they could leave Egghead. I am not entirely convinced that they are doing so, because Oda used “If […]”.
“I also considered not taking that route, but I may not be able to stop Luffy.”
And this is exactly what I mean, here he also used the last part of the sentence to imply the possibility that something could happen to make them not arrive or go there. Think of Thriller bark. I think they might go to Elbaph, but here in this letter Oda seems to sow doubt.
“And finally, at last it’ll happen. The battle between that character and that character may lead to unexpected results!!”
This “battle” was already announced in last year’s Festa Letter. And no, Oda does not mean the battle between Kizaru and Luffy. He wrote in the letter from last year, that the battle between that person and that person happening would surprise us. However, the clash between the admiral and our favorite Yonko is not surprising at all, but rather was forseeable. And if Oda meant this fight, he would have used both of their names, because now that the fight has already started - it would feel awkward to not use their names in the referrence.
No, the fight Oda is meaning has not yet begun. But he will reveal the two participans soon. And the reason why I think so is: This year Oda took multiple breaks – short and long – it amounted to more than 6 or 7 weeks in total (if not more). This means that we should have seen this fight happening around October or November. However, Oda clearly is under a lot of pressure in regards of time, because he promised us a clash between `that person and that person´ since Dec 2022 in his yearly Festa Letter spoiler for 2023. Since we have not seen it happening in the manga this year, Oda does everything to at least give us that in the next chapters. Just look at chapter 1098. He was so much under timely pressure that he could not finish it properly and published it as an unfinished manuscript. So, this means that we will get at least one more clash of two characters in the next few chapters - and we are not aware of this in the least.
Now, that we do know the outlay of the general situation, we can with almost certainty say, who those characters will be. Since Oda said that this fight will surprise us in the Festa Letter for 2023, than this means that the mangaka will heavily lay his focus on this battle. This alone means that it will have a clear impact in the overall main story line of the manga and this means: It will happen in Egghead. Here, we have two possibilities:
Kuma vs. Saturn/Kizaru: Kuma is flying to somewhere we do not know. This somewhere could be Egghead. If Bonney is in danger, than it would fit plotwise for her to be saved by her father, since Luffy is still down. This way we would have Saturn vs. Kuma. However, since we do already assume that Kuma is maybe heading towards Egghead, I do not really think that Oda meant this fight. It is not "surprising" enough to fit the criteria we are looking for.
Lucci vs. Kizaru/Saturn: Lucci is not on the WG’s side and this plays into his cards (No one seems to know it, as everyone assumes he is on the WG's side. Believe me if I say - Oda has throughout the arc, and on multiple occasions hidden hints about Lucci going against the WG, which most readers have not picked up, yet. Oda will reveal Lucci's true alliances in the next few chapters - and he is probably going to do that with a "boom" and having fun doing so. And it is, what no one expects.) This fight would, in comparison to the Kuma/Saturn,Kizaru fight, clearly be surprising to almost all reader. I would put my wager on this constellation, if I were to bet with someone.
As for the unexpected result of the battle, I have a suggestion that this is heavily tied to Ace as a character and how he died during Marineford. Because if Oda already has mentioned that the battle will change the current situation, we can safely assume that this situation, which is created after the battle, will have it’s own level of tension.
Luffy will get another chance at saving `his brother´.

You are overthinking it. Its the exact same language he used with WCI and Wano "if they can leave this island safely, then they encounter the biggest x event ever"
His "he doesnt think he can stop luffy" is just flat out stating Luffy will win and we will go to Elbaf in the next year or two. Its really just that basic.
Nothing has changed the status quo for the journey in over 14 years. Theres no reason for us to take another side journey this late in the game.
Egghead's participants are already here, Saturn and Kizaru. What might end up happening is this arc leads to another marine/WG centric arc on Elbaf (i.e. Akainu), but I doubt anything massive happens to where we are all blindsided by an unsafe choice with series direction

Thats definitely the "main" problem in terms of whos involved, but we already know the Mother Flame/Fusion Reactor is the arc's macguffin. It hasnt been shown yet and its the real reason Saturn is here.

I am other opinion, with regards of the main problem. But let's leave it at that. I know we think differently on that matter - and this is ok.
But I also think the fusion reactor could play a part in the future plotline, knowing that it is one of the WG's three things, they want to save. I at least want to see it. (I also want to see Vegapunk's brain. and how it works... .)

They have to re-record and I guess if the current VAs think they can record for another 10 years then it’s fine… I just thought the Luffy VA specifically said that doesn’t think she’ll be able to even finish the CURRENT anime let alone a reboot
