Character Discussion Kid never got much focus because Oda is saving him for Lodestar

#1
Oda never gave Kid the type of focus Law got in PH/DR or Bonney is getting in Egghead. I feel like I’m not alone in being disappointed by that as I think the vast majority of the fandom assumed he’d be important from his introduction.

While some people think Oda changed his mind with Kid, I disagree. Kid’s character was always tied to Shanks.

He’s a red head with a scar on his eye and only one arm. It’s not a coincidence. In dressrosa we learned that Kid’s alliance was aiming at Shanks. In wano we learned the RHP took Kid’s arm. And in egghead, Shanks destroyed the Kid pirates.

Through all of this, there’s one question unanswered. Why does Kid hate Shanks so much? We know part of this is due to Beckman taking his arm, but why did he ever go after Shanks in the first place? He doesn’t have any road poneglyphs.

We didn’t even get a proper answer to this question in egghead as Kid was defeated before we could even have a real interaction between the two characters. I think it’s very likely the reason for Kid’s grudge against Shanks is tied to both Shanks’s backstory and Kid’s.

At the moment, it seems like Oda still isn’t willing for Shanks to enter the main story. Luffy is heading to elbaf, while shanks refused to meet Luffy in wano and is leaving elbaf.

What this means is that Shanks will most likely be Luffy’s last obstacle for one piece. He won’t be in elbaf, so that only leaves him with Lodestar. The final island before laugh tale.

If this is true, I think Oda’s treatment of Kid makes much more sense. Kid never got any real focus because his arc is Lodestar.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that law and bonney’s story seems to center around a celestial dragon antagonist. Law had Doffy. Bonney has Saturn. Kid has Figarland Shanks.

In the cases of both Law and Bonney, Luffy teamed up with them to help them overcome their CD adversary. The same will be true for Kid.

Obviously Shanks isn’t evil like Doffy and Saturn. Yet in attempting to claim the one piece, he inherently antagonizes Luffy. Luffy said back in chapter 1 that he wants to surpass Shanks. He said again in PH that he wants to beat all yonko including Shanks. At this point, Barto is in Shanks’s territory claiming it for Lufffy and Shanks refuses to meet Luffy for this very reason.

Sure, Shanks isn’t evil. But the story is leading up to his eventual clash with Luffy, likely in lodestar. When this happens, I suspect Kid will play a similar role to Law in dressrosa. He’ll get a rematch where he can actually hold his own but eventually still loses. Luffy will come in to save him like he did with Law.

Luffy fights Shanks in the battle for pirate king

Zoro fights Mihawk(CG probably allies with Shanks) in the battle for WSSM

Ultimately I feel like something like this needs to happen in order for Oda to do justice not only to Kid, but to Shanks as a character. He was introduced as Luffy’s goal. While it is possible Oda could pump and dump him by having Teach beat or kill him, it seems like a waste of his character.

Luffy’s big victories against the yonko are tied to the old generation legends.

Kaido and BM = the return of the rocks pirates
Teach = the successor of Whitebeard

That leaves one more old gen legend for Luffy to surpass. Roger.

Shanks and Buggy = return of the Roger pirates

For now let’s just hope he’s not dead.
Oda already slickly hyped Kids abilities by portraying that metal robot arm> G5+ACoC.
But it’ll be in the land of gaints he’ll finally make his name.

Kid and Luffy vs Shanks at Lodestar is going to happen

I love this scene because Luffy and Law mutually agreeing on fighting the Yonko perceived as the strongest actually saved them from getting packed hard by an inferior Yonko.
Imagine if they tried to fight Shanks as they were in Dressrosa? They'd get molested arguably worse than Kidd. It wouldn't even be funny.
They got very lucky choosing to jump Kaido instead of BB or Shanks, for example I just know Kuzan and BB would clean house on their whole alliance real quick, they wouldn't even allow them to grow strong enough to actually win.

Shanks priority is BB
I’d argue Shanks’s priority is Luffy.

He made a bet that Luffy would be Roger’s successor. He never went for one piece in the past 20 years and only does it now that Luffy has become Yonko.

If Shanks’s priority was Teach, why didn’t he just kill him in the past? Pre skip before he got the Gura? Or during the timeskip by teaming up with Marco?

Why doesn’t Shanks team up with Luffy right now to bring down Teach?

imo while he’s weary of Teach, he doesn’t actually care enough to fight him. If he did he had ample opportunities to do so.

Sure, Shanks vs Teach will happen. But unless you think Oda will turn his golden boy into a hype tool, it will probably be an inconclusive clash.

Shanks seems like the most dangerous yonko. Nobody wants to fight him except Kid, who got destroyed.

Like that’s the ongoing thing with the character.
  • Mihawk avoided a fight when they met during East blue and marineford
  • Nobody wanted to face him in MF, not even Teach
  • Luffy didn’t want to face him first
  • GB runs from him
  • The one guy dumb enough to challenge him gets destroyed
Shanks might not necessarily have been the strongest, but I think he has the potential to be the strongest, as he has the best haki feats and is the only one without a DF.

I think by Elbaf’s end, Shanks will secure a powerful DF and a prosthetic arm, making him the strongest yonko. Luffy beats Teach in elbaf, leaving Shanks and CG as the last obstacles.

You didn't answer my question - did Luffy defeated BM?

Shanks has only one permanent scar - given by BB

His Jolley Roger has that same scar

He goes to WB to stop Ace from going after BB and says that scar is what aches the most

He goes to MF and was ready to fight BB

He goes to reverie to talk about BB

He goes to wano expecting BB will show up

At Elbaf, he once again enquires about BB whereabouts

Whereas with luffy he has bonding of a friend - an inspiration

Bruh... This is as simple as 2+2 =4

yes

The WCI incident was considered a victory for Luffy

And by defeating Kaido Luffy destroyed BM’s alliance.

Even if he didn’t personally KO Big Mom, he still defeated her. He took her poneglyph, beat her commanders, and ended her big alliance.

And BM could easily return in elbaf and Luffy could have his 1v1 with her

Neither Kid nor the rest of the Supernovas are real rivals to Luffy. They could have been but it's been obvious since Dressrosa, where Luffy bear Doflamingo and showed that he was far above Law and got his own allied fleet, that the manga wasn't going in that direction, and I don't think that Oda ever really wanted it as it was due to his editors that he created the Supernovas, with Wano where Kid joined the Luffy cheerleaders wagon, and its aftermath being the final nails in the coffin.

Kid will surely return but he will never be Luffy'd rival or equal, and will surely become one of Luffy's ally again.

And I am skeptical about Luffy fighting Shanks, since he didn't really have any fight with Big Mom, and even if she returns in Elbaf I doubt that she'll be an antagonist again (not for long even if she does) with her turning into O-Lin for good this time, while Shanks is fated to have his great confrontation with Blackbeard.
