So why did he start wearing a mask in order to hide his racial origin (also a very poor attempt considering the wings and the flame).

That's straight up bad plot when they recognized the race as soon as they saw his hair skin as if the wings and fire weren't even more obvious, especially considering they knew he had an unrelated devil fruit.

At least there were rumors about it already, but that circles back to it being a bad poor attempt.

- Once it was possible people would reveal who he is he panicked and went berserk
- Once he thought Zoro could hurt him, he panicked and started fighting stupidly
