I think in the case of logia awakening it's been in the works since at least punk hazard

I also think it's interesting that people think it will just be environmental stuff when I think Kaido actually debunked that when he talked about paramecia and zoan awakening. Since if logia awakening is just environmental affects than its the same as paramecia awakening.

My expectation is so low that Oda can only surprise me in a good way.

Vegapunk definitely used Kizaru's fruit power to research light photons for more uses other than just lasers.

According to Kaido:
Zoan awakening is a new form.
Paramecia awakening lets the user affect the environment.

Logia awakening is either something different or maybe both.

The only logia that I can imagine its awakening was ice. It can stop the time like Esdeath in akame ga kill. Maybe Aokiji froze Saul is also one of awakening form. Well maybe fire too if it change into white fire or black fire. White fire is the hottest fire irl and black fire is the hottest fire in fiction.
Other than that I just imagine that Logia awakening will be more like enlarge the area they will affect. But that's more like "practice makes perfect" power up instead of awakening.

That scene still so weird lol. Vista at least clearly cut him with Haki yet no damage even though he technically should be wounded.

Maybe, and this is the tiniest bit of faith for Oda in me speaking, but maybe you're on to something....

He’s grunting in pain, Katakuri never grunted in pain from shapeshifting. Seems like he actually got hit from the attack and simply reformed anyway.
