It makes sense, it was clear from the first chapters. But the way it's written is disgusting! Oda doesn't try at all when it comes to Coby. He could have spelled it MUCH better.
They completely devalue him not only as a fighter, but also as a character and even as a person. I really don't understand why they are so full of hate. Why do people hate Smoker so much? Imagine how Smoker fans feel. He is a beautifully written character, we have been waiting for his return for many years, and all this time we see how he is completely devalued. Both Smoker and Fujitora are aiming the big picture while Coby has a limited view of what is ahead of him.
His flashback with Garp points that pretty well.
Garp sees the big picuture. Youngesters have more to live than old people. That's why they are priority while being rescued. This is exactly what our society does when prioritazing women and children over men.

Oh my God. Smoker is literally one of the most kind and human characters in One Piece. He doesn't even want anything for himself (become an admiral, become the strongest, and so on). He wants to live as a worthy and honest person and understand where justice is. He is one of the few who thinks about people. Even Tashigi is more selfish than him, lol. Even her. Smoker can be stubborn (sometimes he even looks like Luffy), but... Wtf
