Oda doesn't "think" of anything but his own manga. Sources outside of the manga are official but they are NOT what "Oda thinks."
Otherwise you might as well say Oda thinks that Vista rivals Mihawk because Vista's profile on some fanbook states that he does.

He is a swordsman of greater repute than Zoro. Arguably even eclipses Mihawk in terms of Infamy. Soon to surpass him in strength

It's one of the worst things about one piece. All the best swordsmen are good guys. Vista, Tashigi, Scabbards, Kyros, Cavendish etc.
Even marines like Momongo look like be like smoker and Fuji in terms of motivation.
Zoro keep fighting weirdos while that can't sword as a secondary skill.
