It’s got a lot of components I normally like in a fight. It’s brutal, Luffy is taking a lot of punishment and keeps on going, Katakuri is mocking him and mimicking his fighting style as an insult. You get an introspective into Katakuri’s character and why he’s got this mythical reputation about him.
I think the fight is undercut by two parts of it though.
1. It goes on for too long. I get Oda wants future sight to feel earned and Luffy has to work at it during this fight. But I could not give a damn after seeing chapter after chapter of him being outclassed. It was cool at first then got repetitive and felt like a waste—we got the idea already. It only devalued the fight as it made Katakuri look like less of a threat.
2. The context of the fight kind of sucks. I get that Katakuri and Luffy share superficial similarities regarding their fruits and it became a point of pride for Luffy to surpass Katakuri as the fight went on. But he’s leaving his entire crew at the mercy of the Big Mom Pirates and Big Mom herself to take on Katakuri is an isolated environment. And he keeps coming back. After he grabs Brûlée and he can escape onto other islands, going back to the mirror world with the explicit purpose of fighting Katakuri hurts the fight a lot for me. I have a hard time taking it seriously when the reason for them fighting gets flimsier and flimsier the longer this goes on. The tension evaporates and as good as the choreography might be at times, I just won’t give a damn.
