Hell no. It had the potential to be the best IF Luffy lost
Start of the fight was good. But once Merienda happened you knew Luffy will win no matter what. And that just threw the entire fight on its back. No more tension, no more this and that. Oda needed to seriously dumb Katakuri down and make him weak just so that Luffy can win.
I've seen fan fiction better than the fight where Luffy loses the fight but Katakuri out of respect for Luffy and hope he can defeat the tyranny of BM helps Luffy escape

I re-read the whole Luffy vs. Katakuri fight that starts in chapter 878 and ends in chapter 896.
I find this fight exceptional on several levels:
-Luffy who fights the right arm of an emperor for the first time
-Katakuri which has all forms of Haki -Luffy who must surpass himself to beat Katakuri and his Haki from the future -
Katakuri's personality -The development of Katakuri in some chapters -
The respect between Katakuri and Luffy -
The Haki of Kings clash between Luffy and Katakuri -
The relationship between Katakuri and Brûlée -
Luffy who releases a new Gear 4 to face Katakuri's Future Haki All of these make me say that Luffy vs Katakuri is the coolest in the new world, Katakuri was an antagonist without being an antagonist.
Katakuri showed what a true second of an emperor is, showing his hardening of the very high level Haki as well as the Haki of kings and that of advanced observation.
In addition the fight is actually super long it lasts about 14 or 20 chapters with some external events but it's still nice to follow, we feel the difficulty for Luffy to reach Katakuri at the beginning of the fight and we feel his progress as he goes. until he beats Katakuri with his King Cobra
What do you think of this fight?
For me it's the best fight in the new world.

Oda doesnt even know how to draw sword fights. just lame ass slashes here and there and people think it's a good fight
I don't like the fight at all. It keeps dragging with tons of Luffy asspulls. Luffy got brutally hit hundred of times. At one point, he couldn't stand. A second later, he could jump around and fight. And his counter is just copying future sight on the fly. This is so boring and lack of imagination.
Also, all he need is single-digit hits to knock Katakuri out. The fight is so unbalanced an so injustice for antagonist. I skip reading weekly during Luffy vs Katakuri.

awful fight, katakuri and luffy had no reson to fight each other, even the end of the fight in the kata mini-flashback it described kata as an extremely vengeful man against anyone who hurts his family, but it never mattered during the fight, kata didn't try to avenge cracker or perospero.
they didn't hold any grudge against each other, and katakuri looked very bored 80% of the fight, he wasn't a threat, and he lacked bloodlust as much as he lacked AP, what's even more ridiculous than that is the fact that luffy felt so safe he decided to train a new form of haki during the fight, and katakuri himself was worrying about luffy after he pierced him with the spear, like wtf.
kata only used the spear 6 times in 10 hours, one against a fodder cook, one against himself, and 4 against luffy but only one landed with help from flampe. plus kata could easily land dozens of low AP kicks and punches, but when it comes to the spear he becomes an amateur.
finaly i don't understand what made kata assume that luffy is no longer inferior to him; was it because luffy didn't complain about flampe, or because he was getting closer to kata's level of FS, or because he has CoC? didn't katakuri already stated that he won't underestimate luffy? i thought the superiority argument was only in regards to their gap in devil fruit mastery in which katakuri still maintained the upper hand even against snakeman.
to be fair though, the last part with snakeman was very enjoyable, but everything before that was kinda mid.

I don’t think it stacks up to some of the Pre Timeskip fights but it’s easily the best in the post timeskip
Better art than pretty much any Wano fight, WAY better choreography, Snakeman reveal at the end, Katakuri using Mochi in unique ways to whale on Luffy, the list just goes on

No, just no. Too darn long for no reason. The only thing going for it was Katakuri's respect for fair matches. The Akazaya 9 vs. Kaido is far superior. Yamato vs. Kaido is far superior. Zoro tanking the Ikoku Soveriegnty is far superior.
Oda is not the best writer/artist for fights. There are many better mangaka than Oda for battles. Oda specializes in unique worlds and plot wrinkles.

Only good part about katakuri vs Luffy was when Snakeman came out. It felt like the battle was balanced and stakes were high then, Luffy powered up but he was still getting pushed back hard. Katakuri using his FS, his main forte, to counter Luffy's powerup. No one-sidedness to it. The rest was mid af, no fun in seeing Katakuri punching through Luffy's plot armor or Luffy learning FS out of nowhere
