We disagree with the "great pirate" terminology, since for me Yonkos are by definition, the greatests of pirates....But if anything this is a Luffy wanking thread...soo why didnt it age well?

Throughout One Piece, Oda has bestowed many titles upon Pirates, Supernovas/Worst Generation/Silver-Medalists/Yonko with the greatest of them all being Pirateking.

However there is another epithet that people barely ever mentions, because it is so rare and only TWO CHARACTERS have ever been associated to that title.

These two are

-Whitebeard in chapter 576 "The Great Pirate Edward Newgate", as he dies Oda chooses to refer to him not as a Yonko but as a Great Pirate, because his life as a Pirate is too overwhelmingly amazing for the chapter to simply be called "The Yonko Edward Newgate".

-Roger in CHAPTER 964, his title box says "The Great Pirate Gold Roger", this is Roger as he first learns about Oden being on WB's crew, Roger before he became PK was a GREAT PIRATE, which further proves this title is SUPERIOR to that of a Yonko.

TL:DR Luffy will never be a Yonko, he will jumps straight up to the superior rank : GREAT PIRATE and then becomes PK from there

Another thing to mention shiki’s a great pirate. Oda planned to insert shiki’s name in that convo with whitebeard and shanks when whitebeard talks about the old era with great pirates such as roger, himself, and legends such as garp and sengoku but he felt it would be confusing at the time. Based off this, and what the ace novel said about how these great pirates ruled the sea I would say it’s the same way as the yonko because the yonko are great pirates only difference is there are 4 great pirates that are yonko that rule the new world and it’s a new era. Roger was great pirate / sanko I guess or similar to yonko but with just him, whitebeard, and shiki ruling the seas as great pirates.

Also, Shiki even said roger was a wall that held him and whitebeard in for him kinda similar to how they used to say whitebeard is a wall for these yonko to pass. Furthermore, whitebeard bringing up legends, great pirates, oda mentioning how he wanted to insert shiki’s name in the because he was a great pirate during roger era, in this convo with shanks, highlights that shanks was a witness to all these great battles with these great pirates while he was on roger crew. Whitebeard even acknowledged how far shanks has grown from an apprentice to a great pirate. Whitebeard talks about great pirate / legends to shanks and says not many remember the seas back then and says shanks has came a long way implying shanks is a great pirate. Oda already mentioned in a rough draft or sbs that shanks is a great pirate and we seen that other sbs where he calls whitebeard and shanks legends. Even garp holds shanks and whitebeard on the same level and calls them daikaizoku. Daikaizoku = great pirate. The yonko are 4 great pirates. You can say what you want about yonko and say it’s about territory. But to be a great pirate such as roger, whitebeard, and shiki you need to be very strong. These guys have strong crews that always get hype and portrayals in the story. And their captains are very strong leading them. They rule the new world. Shanks has earned the respect of whitebeard, kaido, and sengoku ofc he’s a great pirate. When whitebeard sees shanks his scar aches. They later clash evenly and we see sometime after shanks intercepted kaido and fought,clashed, blocked, and stopped kaido from going to marineford to fight/kill whitebeard. Lastly, if oda reveals that shanks fought whitebeard in the past and gave him those two scars after roger gave whitebeard his first scar across his chest, not only are people gonna look at shanks different but they will stop downplaying him.

while I'm sure in final edited version that title was taken away ... Jack wasn't a actual Great Pirate ... that's what his men called him at best

Someone should tell Buggy about that, the guy wanted to be a Yonko and then PK after killing ''Great Pirate'' Whitebeard, the poor guy didn't even know he could be a Great Pirate.

The Yonko aren’t even gonna be known as the Yonko by the end of this arc...how are they gonna call themselves the Four Emperors when two of them are likely going down in Wano??

Beyond that, Luffy’s designation as the Fifth Emperor is really only a precursor to becoming Pirate King, not spending years toiling away in the shadows of other giants. He will be a Great Pirate as stated above, but only in the context of being known as THE greatest pirate when all is said and done.

I stand by what I said a year and a half ago, the concept of the Yonko is completely obsolete now and they are only still intact because Eiichiro “Let’s Run This Milquetoast Gag Directly Into The Ground” Oda needed a reason to keep Buggy relevant for the endgame. Anyway, I’m fine being proven wrong, maybe something you say in the future will eventually be proven right!!
