Ennies Lobby by a country mile. Every Strawhat has brilliant character arcs in it, the fights are all great, excellent villains, strong sense of humour throughout.

As others have said, Marineford would be shat on by this forum if they read it weekly. It has it’s high points, but there’s an awful lot of rubbish skirmish fights to get there. It is a very strong ending though.

And I’ve always thought that Oda should have shown the Ace flashback before he died, rather than after.

Water 7 for the characterization and tension for crew. The interpersonal interactions and the internal implosion of the shp was done masterfully. Arguably the crew's best arc.

MF for the slow build up over basically the entirety of pre time skip culminating in a hypefest clusterfuck.

Both are good. But i prefer Water 7.

Sadly, both are just a distant echo of one piece's golden age now.

Gonna lump Water-7 & Impel Down into each respective arc, I feel like the build up to these arcs is just as important as the arcs themselves.

A big part of my enjoyment for fiction, but especially manga, is the quality of the antagonists. So while Enies Lobby was full of amazing moments and drama, it never quite did it for me. Cipher Pol 9 was always a touch boring, a little restrained and the character motivation/designs were not my thing.

Marineford was an amazing arc with a varied cast of new and surprisingly old characters. Jinbe was cool there, something that's impossible to imagine in the current story. Crocodile is suddenly helping Luffy out, Mihawk does his only thing all manga. You get to see Whitebeard and get reveals after reveals on Ace & Luffy.

Overall I like Marineford a good deal more.

Some people prefer Enies Lobby because all of the SH's were featured, whereas in MF, there was only Luffy.

Marine Ford was the best arc Oda has ever written imo, I didn't even miss the other SH's tbh. It was the only arc in which the pacing wasn't abysmal, and the fights, emotional drama, and characters were all top tier.

Ugh...this is tough.

For Enies Lobby, you get great focus fights for ALL the Strawhats, everyone gets to do something during that arc. The fight between Lucci and Luffy is probably still one of the best fights in the series. You have Robin's declaration of wanting to live. You have the Merry showing up to save everyone before having to say goodbye to everyone. Enies Lobby is one of the most emotionally impactful arcs in the entire story.

For Marineford, you have ALL the biggest names that in this world showing up for a big fight. We finally get to see some of these characters that have only be hinted at beforehand. And they all actually do stuff. We have Whitebeard forgiving his traitorous son. We have the declaration of the One Piece being REAL! We get Blackbeard getting his second Devil Fruit. Admirals, Shanks, Mihawk! We get the first real death in the entire story, completely changing the tone and stakes of the story going forward. It's just a really big event that ends the first half of the story in a big, bombastic way.

I think I have to give it to Enies Lobby in the end. If only because I think it's a better representation of the series as a whole. Enies Lobby gives us great moments with ALL our main characters. Marineford is great, but Luffy's really the only main character who shows up in that arc. All the other Strawhats get sidelined while Luffy alone gets the focus. Marineford is great because it subverts the usual One Piece formula. But, Enies Lobby is great arguably because it's the purest form of the One Piece formula.

They're both pretty great. But, I have to give the edge to Enies Lobby.

Water 7 + Ennies Lobby had better writing. In hindsight, Marineford was a clusterfuck with loads of PIS.

Marineford was an event, a culmination of intense and great buildup. I’d liken it to Marvel’s Endgame, probably not the best written solo arc/movie but the fanservice and payoff was sufficient. The finale was also impactful and visceral. Oda was in his zone, great characterization of WB, killed off two major and meaningful deaths that pivoted the story‘s direction, and setup for Blackbeard/Akainu. Blackbeard getting the gura gura was probably one of the biggest what the fuck plot twists in anime at the time.

So, I’d pick Marineford even though I now have issues with how 90% of the war was portrayed — just brief, nonsensical clashes most of the time.
