Mihawk is WSSM. We know he got his title by going around defeating swordsmen until he was the strongest. But then that begs the question, who is the strongest swordsman Mihawk has defeated?
Whenever Mihawk is hyped, it’s always in relation to Shanks. Brannew did this directly when revealing Mihawk’s bounty.
But there’s an issue with this. Mihawk stopped fighting Shanks years ago when Shanks lost his arm. This was back when Shanks was a 1 billion berry rookie and not a yonko. So could Shanks have actually given Mihawk his title? Unlikely imo.
Rather, what if it was Shamrock who Mihawk actually defeated to gain his title. Shamrock is, after all, Shanks with two arms. It would make perfect sense for Mihawk to go after Shamrock after Shanks lost his arm.
Obviously the WG isn’t going to publish that a holy knight was defeated, so instead they lied and said Mihawk defeated yonko Shanks instead, thereby granting Mihawk the WSSM title.
Oda just hasn’t explained this as he didn’t want to reveal Shamrock until recently and he also didn’t want fans thinking Shanks actually got defeated, regardless of Mihawk being WSSM.
In any case, I’m not insinuating Mihawk is a fraud. Until and unless Oda decides that Shanks is truly a haki wizard(not impossible lol), mihawk is stronger.
but it does make no sense for mihawk to gain his title by beating pre yonko shanks. So him beating Shamrock in his prime and gaining the title that way would make sense.
If this is true, I’d expect Oda to make Shamrock the strongest swordsman of the WG, so that Mihawk isn’t a fraud. Alternatively this theory would work if Mihawk beat Garling or Nusjuro, but I think the lie of him beating Shanks makes more sense if he actually beat Shanks’s twin.
Rocks is not stronger than Mihawk, Shanks, Akainu and Dragon
I mean just look at this chapter, xebec is bleeding so he's been injured, he sends harald flying but if he fought Akainu for example, Akainu would have plenty of opportunities to just morph one attack then magma punch xebecs face off
At this point, Posthawk probably granted himself the title of WSS. Imagine trying to act tough by claiming you’re the WSS and then being overshadowed by guys like Roger, Xebec, Harald etc. Mihawk is the biggest gaslighter in the series

Akainu is melting a hole in harald as well.

How's he gonna get overshadowed by a bunch of corpses even if he claimed he's the living WSS of current day
How do you struggle with the distinction between an out of verse and in verse explanation? You can think that it won't be plot relevant how he gained his title, it doesn't mean one wouldn't exist.

I dont struggle with it.
I am just telling you that in-verse explanation doesnt exist.
Until Oda creates it and looking at WSM and WSC, it will never happen.
It is not plot relevant how he got his title, the only thing relevant is that he is the strongest and the one who beats him will be the new strongest.

It exists, as it does for any other title, it just isn't plot relevant for now. Why would people randomly decide to call him that in universe for no reason? Even if Oda doesn't have anything in mind, something logically would exist in the fictional universe...

Characters in the OP world are NPCs who think only when Oda makes them think.
Otherwise, they are blank sheets of paper with no thought process.
I would not bet on Oda revealing this, ever, because it is irrelevant.
Again, it doesn't matter if it's revealed or not. We can logically assume Mihawk wasn't the strongest swordsman as a baby, but he is now, This means he gained it at some point.
The relevancy of this is a different discussion....

Sure.
However, we are introduced to Mihawk in the present and he will serve his purpose in the present.
His purpose is to be the strongest opponent for Zoro and how he obtained the title isnt tied to his purpose.
We only get to see how Zoro obtains the WS title while we may never get to see how Mihawk got it.
