When Zoro challenged Mihawk to a "Swordsman's Duel", Mihawk used his necklace against Zoro, almost killing him.

It was definitely not a traditional form of fighting, and the pendant of his necklace wasn't even a sword.

As it turns out, even the person meant to be a "Swordsman" isn't a Swordsman. He's the World's Greatest Fraud!:josad::josad::josad:

Mihawk switched between two forms of fighting during his duel. Swordsmanship and Necklacemanship.:suresure::suresure::suresure::suresure:

The "swordsman" was only added so that "man" and "creature" could be added as well since Oda wanted to hype up the strongest of 3 different generations instead of just one or calling all 3 of them simply World's Strongest.
We met Whitebeard who was way past his prime and below Mihawk anyway and his title only served to point out Roger not being the strongest during his era.
Kaido is a different story, he is in his prime and his performance truly looks like that of the strongest but Zoro is about to surpass him from the moment he proves that he can split his body and for the finale, it is Zoro and Mihawk who battle it out to find out who really is the strongest of all, the only two relevant when it comes to being World's Strongest.
Mihawk and Zoro and all other swordsmen being frauds for using things other than swords has never mattered in the first place. Sword god will rule supreme, standing atop of everyone else.

Just like Mihawk said

"I shall await you at the top."

It's that simple

They are so fixated on the word Swordsman
Zoro's Dream is to simply become Strongest, it's just that he believes that Strongest Fighting Style is Swordsmanship
And his Santoryu in Particular

When Mihawk Challenged Zoro to grow Stronger, he didn't tell him to improve his Swordsmanship
Nor did he help him improve his Swordsmanship during 2 Years Timeskip
He simply said: "Know yourself, know the World, take your Will & surpass me Roronoa"

After that, what does Zoro train for? Just Haki & Physical Training
So to become Strongest, you must have Strongest Will/Haki reinforced with Top Physical Stats
Swords are just a Medium to deliver Attacks & channel the User's Haki for both Offence & Defense & to also make the Attack Lethal & guarantee Max Damage

This is why Shanks & Mihawk are the Strongest with Mihawk having an Edge due to slightly better Swordsmanship & having both arms.
And btw, this is what Sanji said in Baratie Arc:

"He was going to fight The Strongest Man In The World! He knew what would happen...!!! Give up your Ambition, if it'll get you killed"
