And now that Caribou is being backed into a corner by Zoro as well as potential enemies that may come by it would be about time for him to use Spit-Up
Also I might add that since Caribou was able to hear bits and pieces of the Straw Hats convo while in the barrel it would be very easy for Ol' Carrot to hear what they're saying clear as day which means she heard Luffy's dream as well.
Carrot wanted a good hiding spot on the ship so she can slip away from the minks unnoticed. Kinda like how she snuck on the ship on the bottom of Zou so the other minks would be too late to stop her. Caribou wanted back-up/bargaining chip for his travels with the Straw Hats as he knows first hand what they can be like. And considering Carrot and Caribou never talked before their alleged meeting it would be easy for a friendship/partnership to form.

As for set-up all we really need is a 1 or 1/2 panel flashback with some context dialogue and we're golden
I don't like the idea of Caribou kidnapping Carrot as she has enough slander to her name already
