There something missing in story. May be one/some of the rocks pirates turned on xebec. Or they had another powerful fighter protecting the world nobles.

White beard could go one on one with roger alone. Big mom or kaida could probably take on garp. Then you have the captain himself xebec!!! So how could those two alone defeat rocks pirates!!! Rocks pirate had strong haki plus powerful DF power users!! Didn't include shiki!!

So what do you guys suppose happened?

You have to remember rocks characters wasn't at there prime. We don't know if WB had his df or had any adhaki at all when they fought. Same with BM. Same with shiki. We know kaido was a rookie and nowhere near his peak self. Etc. Roger gaban garp and rayleigh if they were all relatively close to their primes is enough to handle the rocks tops if they weren't. If they were all near their prime then yea rocks should have won but we know they lost so logically rocks couldn't be as strong as the characters we came to know.

my headcanon is that whitebeard defected at the last second and fought on roger and garp's side

he isn't the type of guy to be loyal to rocks and his batshit insane crew forever, plus he himself admitted to oden that he hated it in his "old crew"

Thats cause wb, kaido and big meme were not in their prime yet.
Roger is a bit older than wb and big meme and a lot older than kaido.

It was never said that Garp and Roger were alone, lol.
They both came with full ships of soldiers on both sides.
There was Rayleigh too among the notable figures.

Roger and Garp were simply leading figures of those two factions.
That's why nobody else is mentioned.
It's like saying Luffy, Law and Kidd have beaten Beast and BM pirates.

Kaido was a non factor as he was too young. Big Mom is a meh fighter relying on her natural durability.
Assuming they fought 4v2 like Oda drew in the flashback:



, then I can see Garp and Roger pulling a win extreme diff. The looks of Garp post-fight does seem to indicate they only barely pulled it off:

Need to know about Ochoku and Silver Axe levels... But Shiki, Kaido, Big Mom and Rocks D Xebec are way too much for only Roger and Garp even if they're monsters. Everything has a limit.

Note that I left Captain John out because he seems the weakest member, but adding him to the pack could make a huge impact.

Another thing is Rocks possible strong crewmates and alliances...

Prime Roger and Garp were probably the strongest characters to existe in the story besides EoS Luffy, but i also think there's something that happend inside the Rocks Pirates that lead to the crew fall, besides Rocks being defeated by the duo, and that's probably is the reason the former crewmates hate each other

Roger Garp Rayleigh vs Xebec WB BM. Kaido could have been fighting other members alone but in fighting among Xebec crew should be a factor here maybe Shiki and others turned their back for their own goals. Even in Kaido's flashback he seemed to have ran away.

They’ve suggested that there’s infighting in the crew, they don’t get along, bad chemistry etc. Some might have just walked away, some might have actually fought each other. Either Roger beat Xebec or Garp did while the other got Whitebeard maybe. The way Sengoku told the story it feels like he wasn’t there but I can’t imagine why he wouldn’t be, there’s no reason for Roger to not have his people with him either Rayleigh and Scopper must have fought big names.

There's a very highly likely chance that they only "Endured" getting jumped badly before something happened and caused one massive Rocks civil war

Kaido and Xebec are the only ones implied to have actually been beaten that event

Unless it was stated otherwise, the rest of the Roger Pirates and a bunch of other marines, including some non-fodder ones, could have and probably had been present. I also go along with the theory/headcanon that Whitebeard turned on the rest of the Rocks Pirates during this conflict.

theres a strong implication that someone betrayed rocks because of stuff like Kaido being obsessed with pirate betrayals. i think it was him who did it and helped the govt.

whitebeard would never betray a crew. its not in his nature. i think the big reveal will be that kaido is the one who first turned

Well, I don't really subscribe to the idea that Whitebeard would never betray a crew, especially one as evil and seemingly dysfunctional as the Rocks Pirates, but that's just my opinion.

There's a reason BM and WB were afraid of Garp.
