Chapter Discussion Oda can't write a battle anymore

#5
Yeah, really, most of Oda's fights in the series are actually awful and filled with dialogue/cutscenes.
- Just think of how many complaints people have every fight. That shouldn't be happening, we should have clear victories- not questions about why Luffy shouldn't be losing to a man made of Mochi based on a whim or why Kizaru "lost" because he was mentally nerfed.

Only Oda makes "mental nerf" possible like wtf

You can't scale emotional shit. It can happen to anybody at any time lmao

Loki vs Imu is in a filler phase now, all we'll get are cling clangs and single panels until the plot is ready to move forward.

Which is fair enough, there's always a sequence to these things happening, e.g., Luffy's battle always comes after everyone else's battle has been resolved, and Loki's role is to occupy Imu until then so Luffy can return.

It's just a generally lazy way of writing battles. And One Piece choreography has been ass for a hot minute.

bro was mentally nerfed because he has social anxiety specifically during battle... what kind of explanation would that be for a fight?

Traumatized ass One Piece characters... everybody has a sob story or some anxiety or something

Oda has been this way since at least Alabasta. That's well over 20 years

Never could.
The best ''fights'' in One Piece don't hold a candle to the worst ones in other mangas.
If you read One Piece for fights then you got it all wrong from the get go.
I'll probably regret asking, but to which others do you refer?
This whole time Oda has been a chiropractor and the focus on Brook now will spell it out.

Did he ever? One Piece was always bad at chirography, that's why Luffy vs Lucy is the best fight in One Piece. That's the only time Oda actually had an actual sequence and a good chirography .
That idiot Lucci was too hasty he shouldn't have eaten that crappy zoan df, at the time we didn't know df tiers i thought every df can be mastered peak tier but now we learn that's not the case at all. :kayneshrug:

If you go back and read almost any other One Piece arc he’s always done this lol

Go back and reread the consensus best fight in One Piece Luffy vs Lucci

90% of the fight is just Luffy and Lucci fighting for a few pages before cutting away to something else happening in Enies Lobby

Really it’s closer to 100% because it doesn’t get full focus until literally the very end of the fight

This isn’t new at all

Tbf this probably the worst time to bring this up because just very recently a couple chapters ago Oda gave us a top 5 One Piece fight chapter all time.

It's about as much as you're gonna get from One Piece, solid art, proper back and forth with solid paneling and transitions, and actual IQ being involved as well with Imu going through his movelist with a proper flow.

We got a mix of haki, omen nukes, lethality with the conjured blade, and appropriate physical clashes where Imu physically amped himself to be able to match Loki. Not to mention the sheer scale of it all was a spectacle worthy of a god tier lvl fight, with how powerful Loki's blows look, the ones being blocked looked like island busters, the one that landed sending Imu across the entire island, followed up with a lightning nuke.

I can't think of 5 One Piece chapters clearly better than that from a combat perspective. It has scale, speed, strength, IQ.

Imu is surprisingly one of the most thoughtful fighters we ever had, everything is optimized. On the fly he is able to come up with the best way to approach each situation. Very very rare for One Piece.

Fight’s been boring since Loki went full beast form tbh

That's your typical off panel portion of a One Piece fight.

I haven't read a chapter since the one I'm referring to because I realized we are in the phase of the fight where it's mostly offpanel. For those standards Oda still seems to be pulling some things off, I saw a panel of another sword based attacks with Loki's lightning involved. Usually for these chapters we get cling clangs with nothing in it so this is a massive step up for those standards.

Gear 5 minutes is gonna ruin it. Hopefully Oda can cook with Wings vs HKs
