I don't think so to be honest. Sanji always ranked very high in Japan and Asia which is the main hotspots for popularity votes. I wouldn't be surprised though considered Yamato and Nami have so much votes.

Probably bots. Yamato, Nami and Hancock all came from no where. I am still not sure the whole purpose of having a popularity poll.
I remember Naruto having a popularity poll back in the day. Jiraya, Deidara and Itachi were in the top 15 only for Kishimoto to kill em off in a space of 4 months or so.

It's cool to get some insight on how valuable on the most appreciated characters around every now and then.

Pretty good debut for Yamato.
Imo, she has some characteristics that could attract OP fans:
- Character wise, she is quite logical, brave, and no-nonse type. On the other hand, she also has soft and warm side as a woman too.
It is pretty refreshing to see female character that has combination of those quality (warm and nurturing, but also pretty logical and no-nonse).
- Powerlevel wise, she is strong.
- Physical appearance wise, she is pretty and probably has tanned skin (no wonder she could rapidly becomes fan favorite in any region outside Asia).
- Yamato may also win LGBT's attention since she address herself as a man.

With those characteristics, I could see why Yamato suddenly become so popular in Global Poll.
