Yes they had to get passed the other big mom pirates but the biggest issue was Big Mom......

Take the cake out of the plot, and nothing is stopping Big Mom from fucking up everybody and jimbei and fishman wouldn't even get the opportunity to do anything, cause all of them would be dead anyways.
