Kaido could hear what happens in the cave through the holes in the roof, so he might've heard everything written in oden's journal, and that may be where he got the info about joy boy from, like joy boy being a male and he is the one who will free wano, that's probably why he was treating yamato as a male/son.
Everything feels like a plan imo, kaido even planed to make yamato shogun over new onigashima, he never wanted her to die.

Right, if Yamato doesn't pretend to be Oden. Kaido doesn't want to kill Yamato, but if shes calling herself Oden then of course he wants her dead.

Garp has lived his life under the impression that the marines can be reformed through new recruits like Coby/Helmeppo (and Luffy and Ace though that failed)

No one would say Garp is a model (grand)parent, he didn't have time to be and fobbed the work off to Dadan, but comparing him to Kaido who chained and starved his daughter is ridiculous.
