I think Shanks was on his way to help Luffy against two Emperors, but the news papers came out with the news that Luffy took down Kaido on his own, so Shanks changed his plan after reading that.

Nothing out of the ordinary here, Shanks just wants be a challenge for Luffy rather then just a friendly Emperor. He himself said that if he doesn't do anything about Bartolomeo then his reputation is gonna suffer. Shanks will not be friendly to Luffy because Luffy is not a child anymore, Luffy now is a great pirate and Shanks' rival. Why would he fanby over Luffy now? When it comes to him joining the one piece hunt, that doesn't surprise me ether, I always thought that Shanks wanted to one day surpass his captain but he simply couldn't because of the power balance, but now when the power balance is fucked up, Shanks decided to go for it.

yes the scar didnt deter him too much in battle but it did far more than yamato's attack did . Izoro would go on to powerup after this scene so his attacks should be even stronger .
