If the Gorosei think you have a chance at stopping someone that was arguably Yonko level at the time you become a Yonko this being a Yonko candidate

Well context matters, for example people ignore the fact Koby had been in jail for weeks and was clearly not at his peak shape. They think he went from below Demaro black level to fucking Vice Admiral in one arc when we know that he mastered Rokushiki faster than anyone in the verse.
Kizaru showed this arc killing his best friend fucked him up and he likely considers Akainu and Aokiji friends.

I don't think its the same thing, I didnt even really see it as death. Vega and Bonney even kept repeating the phrase "(losing his will and mind)is basically death" as if they wanted us to feel like they were feeling the pain of kuma's 'death', but that technically it wasn't death.

You can argue the same things about Kuzan losing and running off though? the admirals arent as one dimensional as you portray them and we know for a fact that emotions can be negative in a fight like with Sanji and women or Kat getting exposed.
YOU are assuming that hes weaker willed for not wanting to fuck up his friends.
