Katakuri is Big Mom's Ace like Yamato was Kaido's. People always like to bring up how Big Mom scolded Katakuri for interfering (no "lowly child" in the official translation), but the only reason Big Mom did this, is because Katakuri is a conqueror. As Whitebeard and Kaido said, you don't want too many conquerors in a crew, because conflict is imminent. Katakuri after all is a potential replacement for Big Mom.

Oda basically had to create a "special" commander so that the feat of beating him is all the more impressive for the mc. That's why Katakuri also had to be undefeated and confirmed above his peers.

King for instance never got the same portrayal, in fact, his portrayal was tightly linked with Queen as both were designed for Zoro/Sanji whereas Kuri was designed for their captain.

If you take the wank goggles off you'll simply realise that Katakuri was never meant to be a mere commander.
