Honestly, is this not proof that we cannot even fully trust the narrator as well? In this case, Oda? Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those "Oda's words are not canon" but it's clear there is a plothole when WB was described to never run away from his enemies, never taking hits at his back (implying he got hit whilst running away), yet WB ran away from Garp.
Oda already assassinated his characterization from the start of his flashback debut. Many cats coped saying it was his crew he was afraid for. Even I gave him benefit of doubt

Turns out Garp chuujo was inside that marine ship :josad:his natural enemy

Yeah. Whitebeard from the flashback had nothing to do with the magnificent portrayal he had in MF. Basically Garp in this flashback is portrayed like Whitebeard should've been portrayed.

Gaban is way cooler than Rayleigh
Calm down

Whitebeard will get hype later so I don't worry about that but yes this is technically a big retcon that I think only makes sense if you treat it as him merely postponing a fight with Garp

It's now clear why BM respected WB so much. She knew for a fact he was a bit stronger the other three Rocks elites. It's why she makes a SB distincti at totland when she's talking about defeating the Yonko.
After the chaos of this war it explains why Dragon is always reluctant to go to petty wars like when BB invaded his island

RayanOO

Lazy is the way
Let’s switch WB with Mihawk here how many years would you guys slander him for failing to cut down pre time skip BB who wasn’t even using haki with this slash:willight:
BB too tough

Within next chapters we will see wb clashing with Garp
Would be hilarious / but possible

As a Big Mom fan, I wish it was the other way around.
It wasn't Garp who is famous for his durability, Morgan made East Blue Garp bleeding, Dadan made his head bleeding. It was Big Mom who was hyped for her durability back then at WCI.

But to think Oda retconned this and made it the opposite, turning Iron Garp into total durability monster.
Just accept the Shiryu upscale and rub it in their faces
An almost prime Yonko and an ex Admiral failed to deal damage to Garp with their named moves while one nameless stab from Wanitoryu did the job

Characters always get (over)hype in their arc. Someone said Oden? Kaido?

For example, Oda had to treat MF as if it were contendable, when in fact it was a one-sided massacre. Garp, and if you want to be overly zealous, Sengoku alone could have beaten all the WBP easily. And then you would have still had 3 Admirals for WB alone lol.
And that's not counting the Shichi.

But aside from this, Garp has always been Garp. He was always the closest to Roger (Roger himself gave Ace to him) and equal to Roger and WB.

Bogard

You can't win
Whitebeard died pre TS. Those flashbacks (like the Roger and Xebec flashback) had plenty of time highlighting WB. I don't see any other flashback where Whitebeard is even relevant.
- Incapacitated a HK, slicing the rest of the forest as collateral damage
- Portrayed as the strongest of the group with Roger having to fight him to get Rayleigh out of the way
- Fighting equally with Roger without using his df

The damage in his portrayal is the running from Garp stuff, but there are circumstances around that(surrounded by traitors, not wanting to drag things out especially in a hurry to save Shakky), with the fight with Roger(comparable if not stronger than Garp) validating that

He suffers from the subordinate syndrome in the fact he is less highlighted than captains, and the Shakky-simpness is terrible from a character stand-point, but his strength is still there.

And this is apparently pre-prime Whitebeard.

He is working hard to make these clowns failures into Mihawks lol.
Yeah Mihawk is living rent free in too many people's heads nowadays, it was Erkan and Albino earlier but many have joined

Whitebeard’s world strongest card revoked after this embarrassing retcon of his narrative

Equally matching Roger with pirate aids is not the W portrayal yall think it is either

Prime Waido > Primebeard @The DevilMaster you were right all along
Thats some real deflection going on bro

Linlin does look genuinely terrified of Garp

@ZenZu is right the scene isn’t portraying it as a tactical retreat at all, Garp is literally drawn like a terrifying demon
To be fair, it is both. A tactical retreat and hype for Garp.

Also, Oda used BM to hype up Garp for a reason, cause WB having that reaction wouldn't make sense since he's same level level as Garp. Oda was clearly protecting WB here by doing this.

Oda played it quite carefully there. Gave Yonkos an out by having two smart ones deciding to retreat (while having the young Luffy like retard wanting to fight), didn't get Garp kicked his ass in a 1v3, and hyped up Garp USING Big Mom
