Why would Oda draw the tonfa in front of his body and being cut if he didn't want to show Apoo trying to block Zoro's attack.

If Oda wanted us to know that Zoro hit him because Drake created a opening anything like that he would have drawn it that way but he didn't. Instead, he had Zoro cut through Apoo block and had Drake completely surprised and shook by Zoro's speed and attack.

He was fighting both of them at the same time for a while, therefore he wouldn't be surprised. It's not like Zoro came out of nowhere. That's what Apoo been doing for the most part since he got the antidote. Another attack from Zoro shouldn't be a revalation for Apoo.
