Just finished the series, overall I'd give it a solid 8/10. Would definitely recommend to anyone OP fan or anyone interested.

By the end, my biggest gripe is that Luffy's actor is too goofy/unintimidating.

In the manga, when Luffy gets pissed he's a total badass. I could never imagine the Luffy actor intimidating anyone with CoC lmfao 😭 He needs to work on getting Luffy's angry side down, and maybe hit the gym a bit ☠️

Arlong, Garp and Coby were also great though; generally really good casting all around.

Sets are good- to great, especially Baratie looks awesome, but

They really need to work on the CGI:

This is a about a decade old and from season 4 or 5 of Game of Thrones , long before they had approximately around 10 million dollar available for each episode:
And it looks still better than this:
They may had Game of Thrones- like budget, but for sure not as talented people working on special effects, CGI etc

Crocodile, Smoker, Ace, Mr.1, 2,3,4 etc
Little Garden, Chopper, Dalton, Laboom etc
They have to improve drastically, or else S2 (if it's going to happen) is going to look cheap and goofy as fuck.

I get where you're coming from but Danny's dragons:
- Were way more important than the Lord of the Coast
- Were (before the White Walkers became more visible) the only CGI creatures in the show. The rest of their CGI budget went into the ocassional background scenery and/or castle shots.

OPLA is way from perfect in that regard, but for a Netflix show they did a good job imo. Lord of the Coast is far from being offensively bad looking, and the rest of the CGI, especially Luffy's DF usage, was really good

Massive shock to my system to actually like this.

Certainly not brilliant television or anything like that, but it was a solidly fun show to watch. And sure, they did things I didn’t agree with, but overall as an adaption I’m pretty happy with it. Considering how other adaptions of properties I like has went, for me to actually finish it and want to see more of it is as good as it gets for me.

Did anyone every watch Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events? Reminded me quite a bit of that at times, I wonder if there was overlap in the people who worked on it.

I thought the Strawhats were on the whole pretty good. I actually feel Usopp and Sanji‘s actors did a real decent job in particular and were a bit let down but not getting some of their really good moments from the manga.

(With Oda reconfirming no romance, want to tell that to Zoro and Nami’s actors? Funny, I do remember thinking all these years ago when I first started OP that was where Oda was heading with those two.)

Syrup was the dullest arc for me. Not an arc I cared much for to begin with anyway. Found the decision to stick Zoro’s flashback in it odd timing, surely should have came with the Mihawk episode and allow for more Usopp focus? I was oddly attracted to Sham though, so that’s, eh, good.

I think the highlights were definitely the Buggy episode and then Baratie onward with the full crew. Loved the interactions they all got together on Baratie (drunk Usopp with Mihawk lol).

Think AP lacked that little bit of oomph though. Could have stuck a bit closer to the manga there. Might just be something that I’ll never be satisfied with though, since I’ve adored AP for so long.

Rest of the cast, Buggy and Mihawk, absolute standouts. Great lines for Buggy, but I think Mihawk’s delivery of “but I do like your hat” was my highlight of the season. Shanks was also pretty good, I think at his strongest though in the brief conversation with Mihawk.

His crew have all the hallmarks of getting recast if they ever (unlikely) get to the stage where they will be truly relevant characters, so I‘m not too bothered by what was done to them. Some sacrifices are necessary.

Another surprising star- Helmeppo. Coby was pretty Cobyish and all, but Helmeppo was great.

Garp. Well, I’m just not sure why they thought Garp was necessary? He was given more of his Marineford portrayal than his more carefree side, whihc I’m okay with. Maybe adapting Garp one to one just wouldn’t work- a bit like Luffy. Best moment, obviously, laughing after Luffy bounced the cannon back.

But I can’t help but think, if you’re introducing a Marine early for East Blue… why not Smoker? I thought he’d fit more with what they wanted Garp to do. Stick Smoker in early, maverick Marine going after Strawhats, then as a post credits scene have him say to Coby and Helmeppo they’re off to VA Garp for training while have a Tashigi easter egg or something.

But yeah. Really enjoyed it, glad it’s been a success, looking forward to an Alabasta season. Hopefully they can get ten episodes now. Please god, improve the wigs. Currently, my hope for it is they can continue to improve, and get at least to Marineford.

The show runner explains at 4:35 why they had the Garp plotline.

Imo the reason they went with Garp instead of smoker is because smoker has a logia df so showing his powers will cost more and they were already had budget constraints was one of the reasons why loguetown town was cut that and they didn't have enough episodes for it. Also by having Garp be the marine chasing after Luffy the show can also focus on Koby and Helmeppo.

It got 140 million views in 4 days
For reference it needs 500 million to be top 10 most viewed netflix series all time
Stranger things season 4 got 340 million first week and Wednesday got 350 million. Something like cowboy bebop got 21 million.
While Sandman a show with a comparable budget to OP (16 mil 15 mil) which got renewed for a season 2 got 69 million
All in all its not disappointing but not astonishing either
