I think it was more likely that he might have been meant to die against Doflamingo. It would've been more fitting to his character than dying to Shanks, but that is IF Oda planned to kill him at all.

Cain could fit but it might not be subtle enough, but then Loki exists so I don't know .
It kind of sounds like crown and has the link with the two brothers killing each others. Maybe Pranks is jealous of Shanks.

Edit : I just imagined this whole idea of Garling being a Shanks glazer and literally having a " We have Shanks at home " twin. Garling could be having Shanks pictures in his desk while poor Pranks will never make his dad proud.
