His story needs to continue and be filled in for him to be great.
I disagree about his backstory, though.
A character's full backstory can completely change your opinion on what they're doing. Look at Robin.
If Robin died in Alabasta, how would she be remembered? Her backstory COMPLETETY changes how you look at her character in past arcs. She went from an nefarious criminal, to a broken girl just trying to survive long enough to find out why everyone she loved had to die.
If Kaido's story is over, he was a failed, but interesting villain. If he has more left in the story, I can see him being an all time great, like Buggy.
Dont care if he's dead or not.

Yes, it is. I guess you could consider it the "Bible" of the LOTR verse as it explains all of it's history to Eru creating Arda and Morgoth's rebellion all the way to the start of the Third Age.
1287: The Child of Joy:
- Chapter starts where we left off, at the cliffs of the Red Line, Zunisha return to it's human form and is revealed to be Nefertari D Lily
- Akainu goes straight in to kill her, but his attack is blocked by Luffy in Gear 5
- Meanwhile Dragon finally makes it to Imu
- Imu tells Dragon he brought forth such a hindrance with Luffy and that he should be erased for that sin
- Dragon reveals he's not Luffy's real dad, but found him in a egg as a baby, it was the egg on Rogers ship
- Imu realises the egg was given joy from the One Piece at Laugh Tale and now knows what Luffy reallly is, a Child of Joy
- Dragon and Imu have a advance CoC clash and the castle is split in 2
- Back at the cliffs of the Red Line, Akainu is unable to damage Luffy
- Akainu says he has to use his trumph car, but it might destroy the red line if he does, but he doesn't care at this point
- He uses his awakening and he becomes part of the Red Line and turns into a magma monster
- Chapters ends with Luffy and Akainu also having an advance CoC clash, part of the Red Line is split in 2
