Ability:
Taking the shape of Mihawk's Yoru, only with a straight blade instead of a curve, Mayonaka appears to do nothing at all to the majority of enemies. This is because the spirit of the blade has the same pride as its wielder, and refuses to bother itself with no-names or has-beens, considering them nothing more than eventual stains to be scoured out of its surface. However, against a worthy opponent, Mayonaka serves to grant Mihawk complete control over his Reiatsu, allowing him to manipulate it for all manner of different techniques. From firing it off as blades, strengthening his own skin with ethereal armor, or even creating a radius where anything that moves instantly finds itself cut (similar to Kenpachi's original Reiatsu effect, only far more literal). Still, it should be noted that Mayonaka gives no more aid other than providing Mihawk the power. It has never once trained with him, and aside from the most base of pleasantries the two have never even spoken. This is due to Mayonaka's belief that a true swordsman succeeds on his own merit, not the merits of his sword. While Mihawk does have a powerful tool, and would be an idiot not to use it to his fullest advantage, his own personal skill and creativity should grant him the power to win just as easily with a butter knife as with Mayonaka.
Bankai:
Mayonaka Hoshi no Hashi (Edge of a Midnight Star)
Activation:
Mihawk drives his blade into the earth until only the hilt remains visible, causing strange shadows and flickers of energy to coalesce around the planted sword. When he draws it out again, the black metal of the sword now possesses an opalescent sheen that leaves trailing auroras in its wake.
Ability:
As Mihawk moves and strikes out with his blade, one will begin to notice kaleidoscopic afterimages trailing both behind and somehow in front of the main sword. These images are no trick of the light, however, but are instead hyper-condensed Reiatsu constructs, each as solid and powerful as Mayonaka itself. As such, an enemy who doesn't guard against them will be cut down with a merciless barrage of strikes, and even an opponent who does block will find themselves trapped between cascading blows as Mihawk wears away at their defenses. However, much like its Shikai, this is only the Bankai shown to those the blade considers unworthy. The true Bankai, which is only ever displayed to true masters worthy of challenging Mihawk's position as the World's Strongest Swordsman, will find that the aurora blades are wielded by equally ethereal arms and hands. Instead of simply following the pattern of the main blade, these swords will dance and swing all on their own, creating a beautiful storm of pain and death that only the strongest and most skilled have any chance of defending against. While Mihawk could theoretically make any number of blades and arms, his preference for one real sword and nine ghostly ones has earned him a title known only to the dead who have witnessed his Bankai: the only existing master of the Ten-Sword Style.
