Zoro took command and protected his crewmate, knowing what was coming ahead was something only he had any hope of shouldering. And he did.
It was a good little moment to show how much they did care about the other, but the overall purpose of the scene was Zoro stepping up when Luffy could not, as well as how much Zoro changed since the start of the journey. The guy who threatened Luffy to commit harakiri if he got in the way of his ambitons now risking it all to preserve Luffy's.
