ZOU: is a good arc but the characters
WHOLE CAKE: Big Mom, Judge, Katakuri, Pudding, Brulee
WANO: Kaido, King, Queen, Yasuie, Ryokugyu
EGG HEAD: VP
Characters with good potential, but because of some Oda choices they weren't so well done: Denjiro, Ashura Doji, Izo, Kiku, Perospero, Stussy.
Characters that still have potential: Imu, Garling and Morgans

He has like 6 panels in the entire manga. He isn't even "written" yet. Lol
We've seen him like 3 times ever and his tattoo alone tells more of a story than all of Wano. Lol

Momo was annoying at first but by the end of Wano he became an amazingly well developed character
Then of course there's the Garling whose probably the best new character introduced on the world government side in the last 10 years
Ceaser the clown is a fan favorite
Hell tbh these last 10 years have had some of fhe best side characters in one piece and the ones introduced earlier just got even better

I’m just going to go in naming a few examples that I recall.
So Oda introduces a gag where Sanji looks ugly as fuck on his wanted poster, which at the time was funny because Oda hadn’t utterly ruined the “lady’s man” aspect of Sanji’s character. So then out of nowhere you meet a motherfucker who just so happens to look like Sanji’s ugly ass wanted poster. And he fucking hates Sanji for ruining his life. And then Sanji beats his ass so badly that he accidentally becomes beautiful. And then he tries winking to the ladies but he can’t because he was ugly his whole life. And now he’s diehard loyal to the straw hats for making him beautiful.
I mean I can only speak for myself but this shit was fucking hilarious to me. 10/10 comedy, 10/10 side character.
So then Oda introduces a character who you think is about to be a meme because his only character is “I’m beautiful.” But then you suddenly find out that he suffers from schizophrenia and narcolepsy that makes him fall asleep and randomly turn into an OP ass serial killer.
Again I can only speak for myself but this shit was excellent.
So then Oda introduces a character who is literally so old and close to death that his soul continuously tries to leave his body, but he constantly pulls his soul back in by sheer force of will. It’s a character gimmick that his subordinates constantly think this old fuck is finally about to pass on to the next life, but he is too stubborn and refuses to die. And it turns out he is strong as fuck even in his old, decrepit, close to death age.
Hilarious.
I’m wiling to bet I don’t even have to name any of these characters and all of you remember their names instantly.
Now with that said….
Can anyone honestly tell me they actually genuinely liked any new side character Oda introduced in the past ten years? And I mean, for other reasons besides “they are really strong! They have cool Devil fruit! Lightning Haki go BRRRRR”
I remember that Oda said in an interview recently that creating new characters is most of what he finds fun as a mangaka. Which is amazing to me because all of his new characters for the past ten years have sucked donkey shit.
For me Gigabull was the only even remotely memorable new character that Oda has introduced in a decade. And it’s almost a miracle that Gigabull was cool given how mishandled he has been. Literally no other character is remotely interesting.
A little girl whose character quirk is that she’s starving herself to build cheap villain credo to Kaido?
Three copy and paste completely identical brothers to a main character who’s canonical personality trait is that they have no personalities?
Sanji but with titties who’s only interesting subplot was a fan asking why Sanji didn’t want to fuck his own sister in SBS?
Vegapunk but with titties?
Nami but in an Oni’s body having an identitty crisis?
Law but with titties?
The godking of the WG who is literally just a silhouette fapping in Mariejois’s basement?
Saint Shanks but Oda couldn’t let golden boy be evil so we have to have his evil father instead?
Pirate Madara who is actually an overhyped fraud?
Kaido?
Willy Wonka and the Tonguefuck Factory?
Samurai Luffy but somehow dumber dancing through the streets naked because an obviously lying tyrant tricked him into it?
A twelve year old in an adult female body who just has every Devil fruit power?
Luffy but every single aspect of his character is ruined as Oda turns him into a laughing gag removing all tension character stakes cool factor relatability IQ and now the manga is just Tom and Jerry?
Seriously every new character is just shit now. Oda hasn’t introduced any good side characters (excluding Gigabull) in ten years. If I’m in a good mood I could also say Queen was…okay? Denjiro was MAYBE cool…but not really.

Lolda is Lolda for a reason.
This is actually a very good thread. We don't talk enough about the importance of side characters. The reason why Ennis Lobby is one of the greatest arcs is not only for competent villains but also for likable side characters. Iceburg was awesome, still one of my favorite characters. Paulie was so good - just think about it - how does Kinemon fare against Paulie as a character? Even that old lady Kokoro was more likable than most post-timeskip side characters with a much higher panel time. Compared to those characters, we got a bunch of soulless bland forgettable side characters after timeskip

I keep hearing about how side characters ruin OP cause they take away panel time from strawhats.
But Marineford and Dressrosa had tons of side characters, and was peak OP.
Clearly side characters with poor execution is the issue, side characters done right = peak.
Anyway, only new characters I enjoyed post Dressrosa were Katakuri, and maybe Kyoshiro (pre reveal) to an extend.
Kaido, King and Greenbull had great potential, but Loda flopped.
