So 1043 hinted at more Pirate Jesus shenanigans for Luffy. Apparently he's the reincarnation of Joyboy, the Sun God Nika, blah de blah - is anyone really surprised anymore? Anyway, I'm here to examine what this could mean for the end of Wano, namely the climax of the Kozuki storyline and the final defeat of Kaido and Orochi. And the evidence is pointing only one way - Luffy is the Joyboy Kaido wanted to be, and Zoro is the samurai's will incarnate, the moon to Nika's sun.

The Samurai, the Moon and the Worst Generation
Wano's samurai, other than the Kurozumi clan, are often associated with the moon. The Kozuki clan (光月) in particular is made up of the characters for light (光) and moon (月). Other prominent Wano clans are also moon-themed, including

Amatsuki - 天月- sky moon
Uzuki - 雨月- rain moon
Shimotsuki - 霜月- frost moon
Fugetsu - 風月 - wind moon

Oden and his Scabbards wore crescent moon motifs on their clothes, and Toki's prophecy mentioned the moon casting nine shadows on a night in twenty years' time (Viz translation):

Now, there is really no way, at this point, that the nine shadows refers to the Scabbards. For one, they are pathetically weak and have not a snowball's chance in hell of actually bringing about the dawn. There's also the minor inconvenience of having a traitor in their midst, a man who actively works with Orochi and his anti-Wano agenda. Therefore, the remaining character associated with the samurai, and also capable of casting nine shadows and bringing down Kaido would be...?

Someone in the Worst Generation, obviously. Oden said so himself.

I would go so far as to argue that Toki's prophecy is actually partly Oden's. The information she conveyed is only a slightly more cryptic phrasing of Oden's message, and Toki has never demonstrated any ability to clearly see the future. Really.

If Toki can see the future, why did she only say that a vague 'someone' would come through for her if she kept jumping through time? And why would she consider time travelling again when faced with her attackers in Oden's era if she already knew she was in the right place and the right time? At the very best, Toki can only sense vague hunches as to what might occur in the future. So the nine shadows she sensed could very well have been literal, ie Zoro's Ashura, rather than the metaphorical Nine Scrubbards. If we combine Oden's prophecy and Toki's, the moon that fulfils its purpose and casts nine shadows to know the brilliance of the dawn is someone from the Worst Generation, aka Zoro.

Zoro is the moon
I've written in great detail about why Zoro is the deuteragonist of Wano and the monster samurai Kaido believed he'd never see again. You can check it out at: https://worstgen.alwaysdata.net/for...g-of-samurai-and-deuteragonist-of-wano.20398/.

The samurai need a representative to prove Kaido wrong; for many chapters on end, including 1042, Kaido has been disparaging the samurai and their way of life. They need a redemption, and Zoro needs to make good on his promise to have the samurai following his lead.

Zoro has strong links to the Shimotsuki clan, with Oda dropping hints on-panel and even in SBSs teasing the connection between them:

If Oden was the moon to Roger's sun, Zoro is the moon to Luffy's Nika. Just as Roger could not bring about the dawn and will be surpassed by Luffy, Zoro must surpass Oden, and has already taken his first major steps towards doing so. Zoro vs King challenged Zoro to unleash his haki in order to properly wield Enma, and culminated in Zoro producing a massive X-shaped slash against a dragon, similar to Oden's Togen Totsuka.

Still not convinced? Hiyori, with whom Zoro has had significant interactions, also has a moon motif, represented by the song 'Moon Princess'. Now recall that Enma began draining Zoro's haki in earnest when he heard the sound of Hiyori's shamisen.

Importance of the moon
Now, we don't know exactly what the significance of the moon is in One Piece, but we do know that the Kozuki clan, the ancient Poneglyph carvers and keepers of the true history, as well as the Mink clan, are strongly associated with the moon and elevate its importance in the story. The Minks even have a King of the Day and King of the Night, emphasising the importance of the sun and moon working in tandem to bring about the dawn. Just as Luffy seems to be experiencing his awakening, Zoro will also experience a new awakening of his power, return from his brush with the Reaper and restore the samurai's honour. Luffy and Zoro will represent Momo and Hiyori respectively, defeat Kaido and fulfil the prophecy. This theory becomes even more likely given the revelation that Luffy 'died' briefly and Zoro also appears to be headed for a resurrection. The Pirate Jesus metaphor will be complete once Luffy and Zoro return - Luffy as the Messianic saviour Joyboy/Nika and Zoro as Enma, the king of Hell and judge of evil souls.

Yup, Zoro still has a big role to play in this final stretch. Anyone who’s been reading the manga knows that prime time isn’t very far as of now:

And considering how Kaido won Round number 6 against Luffy, the refs should consider doing a handicap with Zoro for Round 7 because as things stand it took the revival of and involvement of a dead character just to get Luffy back on his feet, presumably as of now. Luffy isn’t ready for Prime time on his own, Zoro is definitely jumping in the ring.

Either that or Joyboy murks Kaido 💀
