Yeah Loras is great. If he was just some joust knight I would understand the argument, heck Jorah Mormont once defeated Jaime in a joust. But both in the books and outside he is praised as a great warrior. And you are right, Brienne was getting her ass beat by him in that instance, before she won by dragging him into the mud.

And if you get to Garlan, Loras says that he is the better sword. Garlan trains by taking on three or four swordsmen at the same time, and leads the vanguard at the battle of the Blackwater slaying one of Renly's ex Kingsguard. Loras is more famous than him as Garlan doesn't care about that stuff.

You and me seem to be in the minority that puts the Greatjon above Maelys.
Maelys is just a mindless brute. The Greatjon, never described to be a poet mind you, at least doesn't suffer from a mental handicap like Maelys.
Now, Maelys did one-punch a horse to the death.
Thankfully the Greatjon doesn't share his anatomy nor IQ with a horse so he takes this duel.
