Character Discussion Sanji character Breakdown and why Oda isn't "ruinning" it

#21
lmfao did you really just make a pretentious thread on sanji with the premise being hes a hype tool

I mean that's the plain truth , Oda does this to all the characters but for this narrative technique to be effective it has to be someone strong who loses

- When the Monster Trio all loses to Aokiji/Kuma together you know that these ppl are TOO strong

- When Smoker loses to Vergo it setup Law to shine

- When Law loses to Doffy it setup Luffy to shine

This narrative technique to work NEEDS someone strong (so a Monster Trio from the SH) and Oda has always been willing to use Sanji rather than Zoro/Luffy in these situations

no matter how you spin it , it's always been that way

I feel Oda was always more comfortable in using Sanji as a way to hype someone than Zoro

A big reason for this is that Sanji was never really meant to be a hyper badass.

yea exactly this ... my only problem i dont see ppl whining about Law , Smoker and Usopp being constant hype tools but the earth split in half when Sanji is

and the worst part we all know Sanji is gonna have a cool moment later but ppl are impatient

Oda doesn't realize that he is ruining it. But he most definitely is.
its almost like u havent read the thread but just the title

nice

Because Kinemon gave them no reason to help him, nor did he even ask for help. He insulted them and didnt want them at all. Yet Sanji still went above and beyond for him. Leading the expedition of retrieving his torso and and sacrificng Nami's body just so he could get it. Your in complete denial. Sanji's kindess has been set-up since Baratie. Stop dowrating everything he did for Kin.

Sanji didnt know what was up with the kids. They were being chased. They didnt have time for the kids.
WCI tried to say Sanji was the kindest and most selfless person there is. Even Brooke said it which means Sanji is the most kind and selfless SH which is nonsense. Even Franky wants to help every person he hears a sad story about and even shows respect to his enemies.

Never said Sanji isnt kind or selfless at all so chill out.

Franky abandoned Kinemon as well.

Sanji was literally introduced with his kindness

It's part of his intro

Oda going for Sanji is the most kindest...isnt something completely new. It's part of his core as a character.

And him being the kindest and most selfless is a contradiction given how he prioritized his personal code over the lives and well being of his crewmates and allies. Its obvious what Oda is going for, but he makes Sanji selfish in execution.

Plenty of times other SHs showed more compassion than him, with Sanji having his fair share of being a dickhead like them as well.

He didnt. Oda said in a SBS that Sanji wanted to hit Khalifa, but his body didnt allow him.

Sanji being a dick doesnt mean he's not kind. Being a dick to guys is apart of his perversion gag. to show the contrast in how he treats the 2 genders.

Sanji's always jobbed. Not all that surprising, everyone on the crew plays a role in the story and a lot of the time Oda needs someone to hype up an arc villain so Sanji takes the task. He still gets some good feats and this arc he'll get himself a fight (most likely against a Calamity).

Sanji can be kind and have a code that he can't break. He's kind in regards to how he'll feed anyone who needs food and how he goes out of is way to help people like Tashigi and G5 depsite not needing to. Him not suddenly throwing away his code doesn't mean he's not kind or generous, it just means that that's something specific that he won't do.

Sanji being a jerk to dudes doesn't take away from his kindness either, he's a brash and kinda aggressive dude but he shows through his actions that he's kind, assisting even his family when he didn't have to or putting his trust in Viola after he senses that she was a good person. And while his code gets in the way of him completing certain tasks, his reluctance to give up on certain women once he believes them has helped the Straw Hats a few times like when he got Viola on the Straw Hats' side at Dressrosa. I don't think the other Straw Hats being kind takes away from when Sanji is kind either but I understand your viewpoint.

Sanji's character did not get ruined. Don't know where people got it from.

A lot of people wanted Sanji this chapter to do the generic "I would rather die than talk" cool guy line.

But that's Pre-Timeskip Sanji

Sanji didn't wanna die a senseless death just because of his belief of not hurting a woman.
He had his friends that allowed him to keep his belief without dying.
That's what Strawhats do, they cover each other weaknesses.

That's why he trusted Robin can handle this for him as he tries to save his own life so that he could go do something else.

Captain Hague from Fire Force explains this well.

If Sanji were about to die, then who will protect the Strawhats crew then? The main role of Sanji is to saves the weak. Now it's the other Strawhats' turn to save Sanji this time.

Characters that have no idea about Sanji's belief, think that a man calling for woman's help is pathetic and "unmanly" (notice how these characters get beat by Sanji easy).

While character like Marco thinks otherwise.

And of course the character that is affected by Sanji's actions the most- Robin, is the happiest we've ever seen her be and that's thanks to Sanji's actions.

So if Robin is happy that Sanji did this, I don't think anyone else's opinion matters on this matter.

Sanji isn't trying to be the generic cool guy like Zoro that would rather die than ask for help.
Sanji's actions are cool if you understand his character arc.

Sanji calling to Robin for help is great because it just reinforces that part of the reason the Strawhats’ side will succeed is genuine trust, friendship, and bonds.

Saying Sanji's character got ruined is just false if you know his character and what happened to him.

If you are saying that you didn't want Sanji to encounter females, that's alright.
But that doesn't mean the character got ruined, it just means you don't like the plot that Oda wrote. But Sanji's character's progression was good this chapter whether you like it or not.:kayneshrug:

I think what happened is not about ruining.

But I personally hoped some quirks would overall improve instead. Maybe Oda simply didn't want to change his character as a symbol of inficiating its originality.
Oda never really changed the quirks of the Strawhats. Chopper has it worse than Sanji because he's as old as Luffy was Pre Timeskip yet barely acts like it.

Zoro is perhaps the only Strawhat Oda decided to make more serious.

if Luffy didn't change a bit after having his brother die in front of his eyes or when Usopp hasn't changed or progessed a bit when his dream is to be a brave warrior , why you think Oda will change Sanji ?

this is a story that doesn't focus on character development but more on these mix of characters impact the world and change it ... but the same quirks and gags will remain (unless for Usopp eventually)
