I agree but sanji really really close to him, there are some arcs where he is the most important after luffy (alabasta mr prince saving everybody and outsmarting crocodile for example)

You called it damage control, but the jump cover featuring Doflamingo is "Heroes vs Rivals". I'd say there are much better examples of rivals than Doffy in the story. Is this unrelated to hit happening during Dressrosa arc?

It is related to dressrosa ofc and btw till this day doffy is the best villain in one piece so I don't see how it is a problem

In terms of actual screentime in the story, I am pretty confident both Sanji and Nami are above Zoro.
Of course Zorotards dont actually care about character or character development, so that doesnt really matter to them

And yet in Sanji's own arc his biggest feat was literally baking a cake, it seems so ridiculous that the people reading OP who have never read WCI would think that's a joke but it isnt

And Sanjitards are cool with Sanji kicking a defenseless Luffy as well as him being the polar opposite of a moral compass

Ironic since he should have been the most important character in his own arc instead of 2nd most important.

Literally the Year of Sanji and Oda says naaaah im still putting you at 2nd most important

It was just something Jump did having all the main bad guys at the time on the front cover. We were in Dressrosa, so Doffy went on the OP bit.

The Sanji one was also just cause we were in the middle of WCI.

Coverpage is interesting its more of two side of opposite coin than second lead.

Luffy and sanji are fighting for same cause but they have opposite personalities that dont mash up well.

Oda could have chosen Nsmi as well but sanji parellel is interesting.

The cover shows the protagonists alongside their deuteragonist.
Asta and Yuno, Emma and Ray, Boruto and Sarada, Tanjiro and Nezuko, Deku and Bakugo..
And Luffy and Sanji.
People who claimed that Original Trio was more important than Sanji got debunked by Oda.
