Simply clashing doesn't mean much. We don't even know how those clashes went, or if "clashed in the past" meant they fought in the first place.
It could simply mean butting heads in a different way.
We're doing a whole lot over something we have almost 0 details on.
Furthermore, I doubt we would have multiple characters calling Kaido the strongest if his equal were a Warlord that isn't named Mihawk.
It makes zero sense all around.

The difference is we don't have any statements of Hanafuda and Kaido fighting to near death. We do with Roger and Garp, though.

It does matter because Ace defeated Hanafuda before he joined WB pirates and we know old Whitebeard was literally one shotting Ace . Talk about difference in power between WHitebeard and Kaido.

It just proves old Whitebeard superiority to Kaido and Big Mom . Its no coincidence that Yamato managed to stall Kaido and Yamato fought Ace to standstill again same Ace Whitebeard was one shotting .

Jinbei who could clash with Big Mom had 5 day battle with Ace, again same Ace whom Whitebeard was one shotting.

He was already a Whitebeard pirate when he defeated him.
