Because Mel claimed her character and that investigative ability while Mango was in the chat. So scum already know her character. I didn't think there was any need for town not to know that now.

Distance yes, but not push them into the spotlight like Light and Mango did since Newbies wouldn't be able to defend themselves too well.

Either way, this is just my own reasoning. I'm not protecting her, but recommending a bit more caution with her case.
